The Samsung Galaxy Fold’s direct successor is expected to arrive in July. The Galaxy Z Fold 2 will allegedly be its name, and Max Weinbach has revealed it may ship with an S Pen. That’s not all the information that tipster shared, however.
The Galaxy Z Fold 2 tipped to include a “new form of S Pen”
In addition to the fact that the Galaxy Z Fold 2 may include an S Pen, the source also said that it will have the Galaxy S20+’s camera setup. The Galaxy S20+ includes two 12-megapixel cameras (regular and ultrawide ones), a 64-megapixel telephoto camera, and a 0.3-megapixel ToF (Time-of-Flight sensor) on the back. A 10-megapixel unit is included on the front.
Now, regarding the S Pen, he said that it will include “a new form of S Pen”. We’re not really sure if that just means a new iteration of an S Pen we know already, or literally a new form factor or something.
He also mentioned “ceramic and stainless steel” build in this tweet. We’re not sure if both variants are expected, or will Samsung combine ceramic and stainless steel, which is doable. If that ends up being the case, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 will be quite heavy.
Ceramic is tougher, but heavier than glass, while stainless steel is tougher and heavier than aluminum. Samsung already included stainless steel in the Galaxy S20 Ultra, as its frame is made out of that material.
The Galaxy S20 Ultra weighs quite a bit, 222 grams, to be exact. That is quite heavy, and considerably heavier than its siblings, the Galaxy S20 and S20+.
The Galaxy Z Fold 2 will need more material than the S20 Ultra, as it will be a tablet that you can fold, basically. If Samsung ends up using both ceramic and glass, that phone will be considerably heavier than the S20 Ultra.
The device will ship in five color variants
Max Weinbach also said that the Galaxy Z Fold 2 will ship in Blue, Silver, Gold, Pink, and Black variants. It seems like Samsung plans to offer quite a few options for its consumers.
Now, do note that the source wrote ‘Galaxy Fold 2’ in his tweet. Earlier in the day, however, he said that the phone will be called the ‘Galaxy Z Fold 2’. So, we’re not really sure what to expect at this point, but let’s assume that the ‘Z Fold 2’ branding is accurate, for now.
Now, there is one more tidbit he mentioned. He said that the Galaxy Z Fold 2 will include either a display hole, or an under-display camera. Earlier in the day, he did not mention a display camera hole, just an under-display camera.
So, considering that several executives from OEMs suggested that under-display camera tech is not ready, that will hardly be included in the Galaxy Z Fold 2. We’re guessing that the device will include a display camera hole instead.
The Galaxy Z Fold 2 could resemble the Galaxy Fold, but without a large notch. It will also include thinner bezels on the outer display. On top of that, its rear camera module will probably look identical to the one on the Galaxy S20+.
