Lenovo may be looking to show the world its gaming phone chops in the near future, as it seems to have teased an upcoming device under the Legion brand on social media.
For those not in the know, Legion is the Lenovo gaming brand for its desktops and laptops. And now it looks more and more likely that it’ll include smartphones too.
Considering other top gaming brands like ASUS and Razer are already in the market, Lenovo hopping in shouldn’t be a big surprise. Lenovo also seems to have been planning this for quite some time now.
Lenovo was prepping for the Legion gaming phone unveiling last year
It may have been easy to miss, but Lenovo has been working on this for a while. And, it started preparing to unveil the Legion phone last year.
Back in December it opened up a Weibo account tied to the Legion brand name with a focus on gaming smartphones. As of today, that Weibo account posted an image that carries the Legion brand logo in the background with a Snapdragon 865 mobile platform on the foreground.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 is for mobile devices. It’s also Qualcomm’s upcoming top-tier mobile platform that will be used in high-end phones. Such as the recently announced Samsung Galaxy S20 series.
It may come with a 144Hz display
Gaming smartphones aren’t the only ones that come with top of the line processors. In fact quite a few phones this year will come with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 mobile platform.
What generally tends to be on mostly gaming phones only though are screens with a better refresh rate. Such as the ROG Phone II and the Razer Phone 2, both of which come with a 120Hz display. The current highest.
The Legion gaming phone may outdo both of them though. It’s rumored to come with a 144Hz display, which would be a slight step above competitors. One thing to keep in mind here is that mobile games currently only support up to 120Hz refresh rates.
Even then, there aren’t that many games that do. Not in the grand scheme of things when you count all the games that are available on Android. That being said, the higher refresh will no doubt make scrolling on the phone a smoother experience if it does indeed release with a 144Hz display.
It would also give Lenovo something to flaunt to gaming smartphone enthusiasts. What does seem to be certain is that Lenovo has a Legion gaming phone on the way, and that it will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865. Everything else is still unclear though.
