Inkee Doodle, from developer Atomic Inc, is a unique combination of two genres that have never cohabited as far as we can recall: cookie clicker, and… well, Scribblenauts (yes, we know that’s not a genre, but it’s close enough).
First, it sees you drawing something on the screen with the tip of your finger. Inkee Doodle has a simple but powerful tool for drawing, made up of a color chart, a slider for determining the size of the pencil, another for changing the tint and shade of the colors, and an eraser.
Using this versatile drawing tool you can daub your creations onto the screen with a minimum of fuss. The interface is 100% intuitive for anybody who has ever picked up a smartphone. You can even upload any transparent PNG file you can get your hands on, meaning your favorite celebrity – or even family member – could become part of the app.
That’s step 1. Step 2 sees you holding down a ‘play’ symbol to turn your drawing into a teetering, wobbling, animated object, governed by the laws of physics. And as soon as your creation has been given physical form, your next step is naturally to smash it to pieces.
As your creation succumbs to your pokes and prods, it comes apart and sheds candies, which you have to collect by tapping them before they disappear. You can also tear your object apart using multitouch, and bounce it around using your smartphone’s accelerometer.
After you’ve had enough candy-collecting, you can return to the menu screen to spend your candies on various different upgrades, which in turn make it easier to collect vast quantities of candies, and before you know it you’re a slave to Inkee Doodle’s addictive gameplay loop.
All this is thanks to the game’s groundbreaking physics engine working in concert with its art asset conversion algorithms, and Atomic Inc claims that Inkee Doodle is just the first glimpse at what the tech can do.
The forthcoming Inkee Olympics add-on promises to take things further by letting your creations compete in athletics contests. We can’t wait to see it in action.
