Last week, reports emerged that LG will abandon the ‘G’ series of flagship smartphones and replace it with a new smartphone series. Now a new report from the same Korean news outlet Naver News Agency claims that the replacement series will launch on May 15.
According to the new report, LG recently briefed the Korean telecom companies about the new smartphone series, revealing the launch date.
During the briefing, the company also revealed that the upcoming phone will use a Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 series chip and offer 5G connectivity. So either of Snapdragon 765 or 765G will be onboard this LG phone.
The Snapdragon 765 and 765G are Qualcomm’s mid-range 5G chipsets. Using these chips will help LG significantly reduce the costs of the new smartphone series. This falls in line with the company’s new product strategy as well. The South Korean phone maker is looking to invest heavily in mid-tier 5G products this year.
LG might revive the old Chocolate line of phones for its new flagship series
LG has yet to reveal the marketing name of its new smartphone series. However, reports suggest that the company might follow Motorola’s footsteps and bring back its old Chocolate line of smartphones. In a new form factor, perhaps. Maybe LG’s dropping the G branding to opt for a hot-word, like Samsung’s “Galaxy.”
The new phone will reportedly house a large display of size somewhere between 6.7-inch to 6.9-inch. Other rumored specs and features include dual-screen support, quad rear camera setup with 48-megapixel primary camera, and a 4,000mAh battery.
This shouldn’t be surprising that many of these features were also seen in the rumored flagship LG G9 ThinQ as well, which is what the new smartphone series will replace.
The new handset will reportedly come with a price tag in the KRW 900,000 range (roughly $740). It remains to be seen if LG is developing this phone for international release or for its domestic market only. The company did not release the recently launched LG V60 ThinQ in its home country. This device is priced at $799 in the US.
As for LG’s G series, the company issued a statement shortly after reports about it dropping the flagship G series emerged. However, the company neither confirmed nor denied the rumors.
“For eight generations, the LG G Series has introduced bleeding-edge technology to consumers around the world.
From super-wide-angle cameras to flexible displays to high-fidelity audio and the Quad DAC to 1440p displays, the G Series has consistently been at the forefront of smartphone innovation since 2012. We look forward to sharing more details soon,” LG said in its statement.
To recall, LG’s G series launched back in 2012 with the LG Optimus G. The series has since seen consistent smartphone launches but this year’s LG G9 ThinQ is nowhere to be seen. LG also uses the G branding for its smartwatches and tablets.
