Xiaomi‘s wearable partner Huami has launched a new model under its Amazfit series of affordable smartwatches. The new Amazfit Ares comes with a host of sport and fitness-focused features and a long battery life.
The smartwatch is now available for pre-order in Black and Army Green colors in China. Priced at CNY 499 (around $70), Huami is offering a discount of CNY 40 to early buyers. The company is also making multiple strap choices available to customers, including silicon, rubber, and leather straps.
The Amazfit Ares will go on general sale in China on June 1. The company has not shared any details about its international availability as of yet.
Amazfit Ares specifications
The Amazfit Ares features an octagonal dial that houses a 1.28-inch Always-on touchscreen color display. It is a low-power reflective screen that offers a clearer view even when outdoor light is strong. The display is protected by the third-gen Corning Gorilla Glass and has an anti-fingerprint coating.
There’s a 200mAh Lithium-polymer battery inside that can keep the device running for up to 90 days if used in watch-only mode.
Generally, Huami promises up to 14 days of battery life in moderate usage. If used continuously in GPS mode, it can last for about a day only, 23 hours to be precise. The battery charges fully in about 2 hours using the magnetic charging stand.
The Amazfit Ares is compatible with smartphones running Android 5.0 and above, or iOS 10.0 and above. It connects to your smartphone over Bluetooth 4.2 LE and can receive notifications for calls, messages, emails, weather, and other apps. The watch also offers offline payment and music control functionalities.
Sensors onboard include a bio-tracking optical sensor, a 3-axis acceleration sensor, a buzzer, and a barometer, as well as GPS and GLONASS for precise positioning.
Built for fitness enthusiasts
The Huami Amazfit Ares has a polycarbonate body and comes with 5ATM water resistance, meaning that it can survive 50 meters underwater for about 10 minutes. It offers 70 different sports modes, including walking, outdoor running, indoor running, cycling, swimming, hiking, skating, yoga, dance, boxing, archery, and many more.
It packs Huami’s self-developed sports algorithm which monitors and records 40 key sports indicators such as heart rate, speed, and altitude. With the FIRSTBEAT algorithm, the Amazfit Ares can provide professional-level sports analysis, Huami claims.
The PAI (Personalized Activity Intelligence) health analysis system can further provide a “multi-dimensional dynamic comprehensive evaluation” of personal physiological data.
The Amazfit Ares has a dimension of 46.5 × 55.6 × 14mm and weighs 48 grams. At under $100, it is another killer proposition from Huami and can be a hit among fitness enthusiasts looking for affordable fitness-tracking gadgets. The smartwatch should launch globally in the coming months.
