Meizu has announced its new flagship smartphones in China, the Meizu 17 and Meizu 17 Pro. Those two smartphones look basically identical, but they do differ on the inside.
The Meizu 17 & 17 Pro have the exact same design
The Meizu 17 and 17 Pro are made out of metal and glass. Both phones have extremely thin bezels, and a small display camera hole. That hole is placed in the top-right corner on both smartphones.
The two devices come with rounded corners, and the same goes for display corners as well. The power / lock and volume up / down buttons are located on the right-hand side of these two phones.
On the back, you’ll notice horizontally-aligned cameras, and the design of that camera module is also quite unique. We haven’t really seen anything like it thus far. A ring flash sensor is in the middle, while it is flanked by two cameras on each side.
Meizu’s logo is placed on the back of this phone as well, and the device is curved on the back, towards the sides. It seems like its curved towards the top and bottom of the device as well. Do note that its display is flat, though.
The ‘Pro’ model packs in a superior spec sheet
Now, in terms of specs, these two phones do have some things in common. The ‘Pro’ offers a bit more features, and power, which is why it has that ‘Pro’ tag attached to it. Let’s go over the similarities first, shall we.
Both of these phones are fueled by the Snapdragon 865 64-bit octa-core processor. Both devices include the Snapdragon X55 modem, and support 5G as a result of that.
They also come with absolutely identical displays. Both phones feature a 6.6-inch fullHD+ (2340 x 1080) display with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. That is resulting in a 390PPI, in case you were wondering. This display, on both phones, offers a 90Hz refresh rate, and 180Hz touch sampling.
The ‘Pro’ model includes LPDDR5 RAM, unlike the regular one
The Meizu 17 packs in 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM, while the ‘Pro’ model also comes in an 8GB RAM variant, and also a 12GB RAM model. The ‘Pro’ model includes LPDDR5 RAM, though. So not only does the ‘Pro’ unit comes with more RAM, it also includes newer and faster RAM.
The Meizu 17 comes in 128GB and 256GB storage variants, and this is UFS 3.1 storage we’re looking at here. The Meizu 17 Pro, on the other hand, includes 128GB of storage in the 8GB RAM model, while it packs in 256GB of storage with the 12GB RAM variant. It’s also UFS 3.1 flash storage.
Both phones feature an in-display fingerprint scanner, of an optical variety. The company claims that you can unlock these two devices in 0.15 seconds with that fingerprint scanner.
Both phones also come with a 4,500mAh battery, which supports 30W Super mCharge wired charging. The Meizu 17 Pro also supports 30W wireless charging, unlike its sibling. Bluetooth 5.1 is included in both devices, and the same goes for an NFC chip.
Both devices take advantage of Sony’s 64-megapixel sensor for the main camera
There are some differences in the camera department as well. Both phones are fueled by the same main sensor. They include a 64-megapixel Sony IMX 686 main camera (f/1.8 aperture, 0.8um pixel size, 26mm 6P lens). The rest of the setup is different, though.
The Meizu 17 also includes a 12-megapixel Sony IMX362 camera with an f/1.9 aperture, 1.4um pixel size, and a 6P lens. In addition to that, an 8-megapixel ultrawide camera (Samsung ISOCELL 4H7 sensor, f/2.2 aperture, 1.12um pixel size, 16MM 5P lens) is included. The last camera on this phone is a 5-megapixel macro camera (Samsung’s ISOCELL 5E9 sensor, f/1.9 aperture, 1.12um pixel size, 4P lens)
The Meizu 17 Pro includes an 8-megapixel telephoto camera (OmniVision 08A10 sensor, f/2.4 aperture, 1.0um pixel size, 79mm 5P lens), in addition to its main camera. A 32-megapixel Sony IMX616 camera with an f/2.2 aperture, 0.8um pixel size, and 15mm 6P lens is also included. That is the phone’s dedicated ultrawide camera. On top of all that, a TOF Samsung ISOCELL 33D camera is also included (f/1.4 aperture).
Both devices measure 160 x 77.2 x 8.5mm, so they’re quite wide. The Meizu 17 weighs 199 grams, while the ‘Pro’ model is heavier at 219 grams. Android 10 comes pre-installed, along with a new version of Flyme OS.
Pricing for the Meizu 17 series starts at $522 in China
The Meizu 17 comes in white, gray, and green color options. The ‘Pro’ unit, on the other hand, comes in white, cyan, and black color options. The Meizu 17 pricing starts at the equivalent of $522 in China (8GB of RAM + 128GB of storage), while the ‘Pro’ model’s pricing starts at the equivalent of $606 (8GB of RAM + 128GB of storage).
