The OnePlus 8 Pro camera has a rather odd x-ray feature, it can see through thin plastic and some other materials. Just to be clear, this is the color filter camera we’re talking about.
The OnePlus 8 Pro color filter camera sees through thin plastic & more
Ben Geskin demonstrated this in a series of examples on Twitter. He even uploaded a YouTube video in order to better demonstrate this feature. You can check out that video below this paragraph. In it, it shows the Oculus Quest controllers under the effect of OnePlus 8 Pro’s camera.
A second example includes the Apple TV box. This is also a video, though it has been uploaded to Twitter. This is a great example, as it really shows a lot of detail on the inside of that box.

This is not a particularly useful feature, to be quite honest, but it’s something OnePlus hasn’t talked about. The company obviously knew what this color filter camera can do, but decided not to talk about it.
So, how is this possible? Well, this OnePlus 8 Pro color filter camera uses IR light in order to penetrate certain materials, such as thin plastic. It can also penetrate several other materials.
What are those materials? Well, users on Reddit discovered that it allows you to see through red wine, and coke, for example. Though there are probably more examples.
The primary purpose of this camera is to take weird-looking images with false colors
Its primary purpose, though, is to create rather weird images with false colors. It does that by post-processing some photos that have been taken with the phone’s camera.
This is not something we’ve seen on smartphones before. Some cameras had such an ability, and some other devices, but not smartphones, at least not mainstream ones.
The OnePlus 8 Pro comes with four cameras, and this color filter camera is the most gimmicky one. This is a rather neat feature, but the other three cameras are far more useful in real life.
The phone includes a really capable 48-megapixel main camera, backed by a 48-megapixel ultrawide camera, and an 8-megapixel telephoto unit.
The device was announced quite recently, actually. The phone arrived alongside the OnePlus 8, though the ‘Pro’ model offers far more than the regular model this time around.
The device comes with a superior camera setup, water and dust resistance, newer and faster RAM, and extremely fast wireless charging. It is quite large, though.
