Samsung today announced a new Exynos processor with integrated 5G connectivity. The new Exynos 880 is a mid-range chipset and seemingly an underclocked version of the Exynos 980, the company’s first 5G-integrated SoC announced last year.
This chipset makes its debut on the Vivo Y70s 5G, which was unveiled yesterday in China. The Vivo smartphone had appeared in Geekbench benchmarks with the Exynos 880 SoC earlier this month.
Exynos 880 specifications
The Exynos 880 is based on Samsung’s 8-nanometer FinFET process technology, the same process as the Exynos 980. It has an octa-core CPU with two ARM Cortex-A77 cores clocked at 2.2GHz and six power-efficient Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 1.80GHz.
There’s a Mali-G76 MP5 GPU that supports advanced graphics APIs to deliver faster gaming performance with reduced loading times and high frame rates.
The new chipset is compatible with LPDDR4X RAM and UFS 2.1 and eMMC 5.1 storage, the same standards also supported by its high-end sibling. It only supports Full HD+ (2520×1080) display though, as opposed to WQHD+ (3360×1440) displays supported by the Exynos 980.
The Exynos 880 ISP supports triple-camera setups with a single-camera maximum resolution of 64-megapixel or 20-megapixel+20-megapixel dual-camera setups. It also supports 4K video recording at 30fps as well as 4K video playback with H.265, H.264, and VP9 codecs.
The Exynos 880 features an integrated neural processing unit (NPU) and digital signal processor (DSP) for on-device AI. They both share a controller and DMA (Direct Memory Access) for faster and efficient performance.
Low-band 5G, no Wi-Fi 6
For connectivity, the Exynos 880 gets an integrated 5G modem that supports sub-6GHz 5G networks (low-band). It is seemingly the same modem found in Exynos 980, so there’s no mmWave (high-band 5G) support here. It is a multi-mode modem that works with diverse major networks from 2G to 4G LTE for reliable mobility.
Samsung says this chipset can deliver download speeds of up to 2.55Gbps and upload speeds of up to 1.28Gbps over low-band 5G. The company also promises download and upload speeds of 1Gbps and 200Mbps respectively LTE network.
There’s also support for E-UTRA-NR Dual Connectivity (EN-DC). This combines 5G and LTE networks to maximize download speed to up to 3.55Gbps and upload speed to up to 1.38Gbps.
The Exynos 880 features a 4-mode GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) receiver for location services. It supports GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, and Galileo navigation systems.
Other features include support for Bluetooth 5.0, dual-band Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac), FM Radio, and USB Type-C port. Unfortunately, the Exynos 880 doesn’t get support for the new Wi-Fi 6 standard which brings improved speeds and greater stability.
