T-Mobile Releases May 2020 Security Update For The Galaxy S10 Series

The May 2020 Android security patch is now rolling out for the Samsung Galaxy S10 series on T-Mobile. The Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10+, and Galaxy S10e are all receiving the latest security maintenance release from the un-carrier.

The update is rolling out over the air with the firmware version G973USQS3DTD5, G975USQS3DTD5, and G970USQS3DTD5 for the three models. The OTA download size for the Galaxy S10 weighs in at 207.25MB. The Galaxy S10+ and S10e should also be getting a similar-sized update.

This update doesn’t seem to bring anything new to Samsung’s 2019 Galaxy S flagships. The accompanying changelog, OTA file size, and the firmware number all hint that it’s just the May 2020 Android security patch and nothing else. Nevertheless, it’s always good to have the most up-to-date security patches on your phone.

Galaxy S10 series get May security update on T-Mobile

T-Mobile released the May 2020 Android security update for the Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+ earlier this week. Days later, the update is now hitting the Galaxy S10 phones.

This month’s security update brings fixes for nine critical as well as dozens of high and moderate-risk vulnerabilities found in the Android OS. In addition, the update also brings fixes for 19 Samsung Vulnerabilities and Exposures (SVE).

SVE are the vulnerabilities that are exclusive to Samsung’s custom Android skin, the One UI. One of the SVE that the company fixed with the May update was a critical zero-click vulnerability that impacted all its smartphones sold since 2014.

The security flaw was related to the ‘Qmage’ image format (.qmg) that Samsung uses in its themes. The vulnerability could be exploited to remotely execute an attack on a target device.

Mateusz Jurczyk, a security researcher working with Google’s Project Zero bug-hunting team, discovered a way to exploit it and reported the same to Samsung in February this year. The South Korean company has now fixed it with the May update.

Samsung has already released the May 2020 Android security update to several Galaxy smartphones, including the Galaxy S20, Galaxy Fold, and the Galaxy Z Flip.

Remaining eligible models should also get the update in the coming days.

As always, updates are released in batches and may not be available for all eligible units simultaneously.

You should receive a notification once the OTA update reaches your Galaxy smartphone. You can also check manually if the update is available for your device from the Software update menu in your phone’s Settings app.
