Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865+ mobile processor may arrive as early as next month. According to the well-known tipster Ice Universe, the upgraded chipset is set to launch in July unless there is an “accident.”
There has been a lot of uncertainty surrounding the Snapdragon 865+ launch. While it was initially reported to be launching in the third quarter this year, reports later suggested it may not come at all this year. Well, it appears the initial reports were correct and the Snapdragon 865+ is indeed arriving in Q3 2020.
The same source had previously claimed that Samsung’s Galaxy Note 20 Ultra will feature the new Qualcomm chipset. In fact, the Snapdragon 865+ will be in the heart of most of the flagship smartphones coming later this year.
When Qualcomm launched the Snapdragon 855+ last year, OEMs quickly switched to it. Some OEMs even re-launched their devices with the ‘Plus’ variant. Expect the same to happen this year as well.
Along with the Galaxy S20 series, the likes of Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5G, ASUS Rog Phone III, iQoo 3 Pro, and Lenovo’s Legion gaming phone are also rumored to ship with the Snapdragon 865+. Samsung’s upcoming flagship Android tablet, the Galaxy Tab S7 will likely pack the upgraded Qualcomm chipset as well.
The Snapdragon 865+ to launch in July
The detailed specs of the Snapdragon 865+ are still under the wraps. However, the chipset is certain to pack significant upgrades over the Snapdragon 865.
Reports are that the new processor will have a clock speed of 3.09GHz. For reference, the Snapdragon 865 operates at a clock speed of 2.84GHz. So the new Qualcomm chipset should bring a significant performance boost over its predecessor.
AnTuTu scores of the Snapdragon 865+ are also impressive. The new chipset scored a total of 667,253 points in the benchmarking test, smashing up the high scores previously set by none other than the Snapdragon 865.
It includes a CPU score of 184,973 points, a GPU score of 283,302 points, an MEM score of 112,050 points, and a UX score of 86,928 points.
Smartphones running the Snapdragon 865 usually just tip over the 600,000-point mark on AnTuTu benchmarking tests.
So the ‘Plus’ variant appears to be quite an upgrade from Qualcomm. It should be safe to assume that the new chipset will bring improved camera capabilities and enhanced AI features along with a better performance.
While the recent piece on information comes from a pretty reliable source, it’s still not clear when exactly Qualcomm will announce the Snapdragon 865+. We’ll likely get to know that in the coming days, as we enter the month of July.
