Upcoming Huawei Foldable Smartphone Could Be Launched As 'Mate V'

Recent leaks have suggested the upcoming foldable smartphone from Huawei could be called the Mate X2. According to the company’s latest trademark filed at the EUIPO (European Union Intellectual Property Office), the successor to last year’s Mate X could be launched as Mate V.

The company filed a trademark for the name “Mate V” under section 9 on July 3. Moreover, the earlier patented smartphone names are also categorized under section 9. However, this information has to be taken with a pinch of salt before there is any official confirmation from Huawei.

Huawei Mate V could be company’s new foldable smartphone

In the past, Huawei has always introduced the first of its kind features by announcing a new Mate lineup. The Mate S, launched in 2015, is the first smartphone to come with a pressure-sensitive display.

Last year’s Mate X was the world’s first 5G foldable smartphone. Earlier this year, Huawei also launched the Mate Xs as a minor upgrade to the Mate X foldable smartphone.

As per the recent leaks, the upcoming foldable smartphone will be the first Huawei smartphone to offer a 120Hz refresh rate. Also, the Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 has been leaked to sport a 120Hz foldable display.

While there is no confirmation from the company, we expect this new foldable smartphone to be launched as the Mate V.

Rumored to launch with a 120Hz foldable display

It could be the same Mate X2 smartphone mentioned in earlier leaks. Like the Mate X, the rumored Mate V may also come with the same out-folding design featuring an OLED display.

There is also a chance that Huawei might unveil a completely new foldable smartphone under the Mate V name. Just like what Samsung did with the Galaxy Z Flip smartphone.

The Mate 40 series is expected to be officially launched in October this year. Even the Mate V foldable smartphone could be unveiled on the same stage. The earlier leaks suggested that the successor to Mate X will also use ultra-thin glass (UTG) technology to improve the durability of the foldable display.

It will most likely come powered by the HiSilicon Kirin 990 5G SoC built on the 7nm+ EUV process. The device might also come with Stylus support. As of now, Huawei offered Stylus with the MediaPad tablets.

While the device will be running on Android 10, it will miss out on Google Mobile Services (GMS) support.
