Phone Comparisons: Motorola Edge+ vs OnePlus 8 Pro

It’s time to compare the very best of Motorola and OnePlus, the Motorola Edge+ vs OnePlus 8 Pro. These are the flagship smartphones from their respective companies, and they both have a lot to offer. Both phones are great in their own regard, though they don’t suit everyone, of course.

In some ways, these two phones are similar. In others, they’re quite different. If you’re looking to shell out a lot of cash for a new phone, you should know what are the benefits of each phone. Well, we’ll try to help out with that. In this article, we’ll pit these two smartphones one against the other, across a number of categories.

As per usual, we’ll kick things off with specifications, and move to design, display, performance, and various other aspects of the two phones. That being said, do note that these are only our opinions, yours may differ, of course. There we go, it’s time to compare the Motorola Edge+ vs OnePlus 8 Pro.

Specs

Motorola Edge+ vs OnePlus 8 Pro: Design

So, these two phones look quite similar when it comes to the design, at least from the front. Both phones are quite tall, and both offer extremely thin bezels. You’ll also notice curved displays on both phones, and a display camera hole that is placed in the same spot. That camera hole sits in the top-left corner of the display, on both devices.

Both phones are made out of metal and glass, and both sport curved backs. These two devices are also quite slippery, so keep that in mind. Now, the camera positioning on the back is a bit different. Both camera modules feature vertically-aligned camera sensors, but the one on the OnePlus 8 Pro is centered, while the Motorola’s is in the top-left corner.

Do note that the OnePlus 8 Pro is considerably wider, despite the fact it has a slightly larger display. The phone measures 74.4mm in terms of width, compared to 71.4mm on the Motorola Edge+. The OnePlus 8 Pro is also a bit taller, but it’s considerably thinner, 8.5mm vs 9.6mm. The two devices are similar in terms of weight, 203 grams on the Motorola Edge+ vs 199 grams on OnePlus’ flagship.

Both devices look great, and it’s more of a personal preference when it comes to the design. If you want a narrower, and less tall phone, but you don’t mind the thickness, go for the Motorola Edge+. If the opposite applies, the OnePlus 8 Pro is here. Both phones offer excellent build quality.

Motorola Edge+ vs OnePlus 8 Pro: Display

Both phones feature really large displays. The one on the Motorola Edge+ measures 6.7 inches, while the OnePlus 8 Pro’s comes in at 6.78 inches. Both panels are curved (though Motorola’s offers a steeper curve, as it’s a waterfall panel), by the way, and both are OLED displays. Do note that the OnePlus 8 Pro’s does come with a higher resolution, and also a higher refresh rate.

The Motorola Edge+ offers a fullHD+ (2340 x 1080) panel with 90Hz refresh rate. The OnePlus 8 Pro sports a QHD+ (3168 x 1440) display with 120Hz refresh rate. Both panels are protected by the Gorilla Glass 5, and both support HDR10+ content. Which is better, though? Well, both panels are great, to be quite honest.

Both phones had some issues with their displays, though not all of them, just some units. Both companies reacted fast, though, and that’s not exactly the topic here. In general, both displays are truly great, they’re vibrant, and extremely sharp. Both panels also offer great viewing angles. To be quite honest, to us, the OnePlus 8 Pro’s panel looks a bit better in terms of out, across the board, but the difference is not big at all.

You will also be hard-pressed to notice the difference between 90Hz and 120Hz refresh rate, unless you’re using the two phones side by side. Both are really smooth in terms of screen performance, and performance in general, but that’s the next chapter in this comparison.

Motorola Edge+ vs OnePlus 8 Pro: Performance

So, what about performance? Well, both of these phones are flagship-grade devices, so you’d expect great performance, right? Well, yes. Luckily, they both provide such performance. The Snapdragon 865 is included in both phones, while both are backed by plenty of RAM as well. The OnePlus 8 Pro has to push a higher resolution display with a higher refresh rate, but that’s not something you’ll notice, at all.

Both phones breeze through pretty much everything. It doesn’t really matter if you’re just browsing the web, consuming multimedia, or gaming… they’ll both do the job, and then some. We haven’t really noticed any significant lag, or even jittering that should be mentioned here. If performance is what you’re worried about, don’t be.

Motorola Edge+ vs OnePlus 8 Pro: Battery

You can also expect excellent battery life out of both of these devices. The Motorola Edge+ and OnePlus 8 Pro offer 5,000mAh and 4,510mAh battery packs, respectively. Those are huge batteries, and they do deliver in terms of battery life. The Motorola Edge+ may be able to offer slightly more impressive numbers, but the difference is not that big at all. It does have a lower resolution display, and lower display refresh rate, so the advantage is expected when you consider such a large battery… and it shows.

Both phones should be able to get most of you over that 6-hour screen-on-time mark, easy. That will depend largely on how you use your phone, of course. If you’re game a lot, those numbers will be lower. The point is, though, both phones offer great battery life, and are amongst the best Android flagships in that regard.

Now, both phones also offer fast charging, but the OnePlus 8 Pro has an edge in that regard. The Motorola Edge+ offers 18W fast wired charging, while the OnePlus 8 Pro offers 30W fast wired charging. It is noticeably faster when it comes to recharging as well. It also offers 30W wired charging, compared to 15W wired charging on Motorola’s flagship. Both devices also come with reverse wireless charging, 5W and 3W, respectively, for the Motorola Edge+ and OnePlus 8 Pro.

Motorola Edge+ vs OnePlus 8 Pro: Cameras

These two smartphones have considerably different camera setups. They both rely on four cameras, but the Motorola Edge+ comes with a 108-megapixel camera, while the OnePlus 8 Pro includes a 48-megapixel one. The ultrawide sensor on the OnePlus 8 Pro is considerably larger, and the OnePlus 8 Pro doesn’t have a ToF 3D camera, but a color filter instead. Both units also come with a telephoto camera.

That being said, the image quality in daylight is excellent on both phones. The details are excellent, as are the colors. The noise is basically non-existent, while the dynamic range is really good as well. Color balance is also well-hit, and the whole experience in good light is excellent, to say the least. That actually goes for both main and ultrawide cameras on these two phones. We did notice that the colors are a bit more consistent between the main and ultrawide cameras on the OnePlus 8 Pro.

Now, in terms of low light shots, well, they’re good on both phones, but more so on the OnePlus 8 Pro. The Motorola Edge+ does a great job with noise reduction, and manages to keep the detail, but it tends to underexpose shots. That is not the issue with the OnePlus 8 Pro, at least in most cases. Neither of these two phones are the best in terms of low light shots, but they’re good enough.

Motorola Edge+ vs OnePlus 8 Pro: Audio

The Motorola Edge+ does have one major advantage when it comes to audio, at least for some people, and that’s a 3.5mm headphone jack. The OnePlus 8 Pro does not come with it. Both devices do offer stereo speakers, though, and you can always use a Type-C port on the bottom to hook up wired earphones / headphones.

Both sets of speakers are really, really good. They get fairly loud, and remain clear all the way through. Some minor distortion is noticeable at the very highest of volumes, but it’s barely noticeable. The sound is excellent in that regard. When it comes to headphones, they’re quite similar as well. They offer really good sound, with good lows, mids, and highs, though mids and highs are a bit more pronounced. You’ll get enough bass in both cases.
