According to two separate reports, Samsung is planning to launch a budget foldable smartphone. The first report is coming from SamMobile, who claims that the model number for this phone is ‘SM-F415’.
On the flip side, the Samsung ‘SM-F415F’ got certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance, basically confirming the report we’ve mentioned in the first paragraph. This Wi-Fi Alliance certification does not share any additional details, though.
Now, as some of you may know, Samsung’s model numbers are quite descriptive. The letter ‘F’ is used for the company’s foldable handsets. The SM-F900, SM-F700, and SM-F916 are for the Galaxy Fold, Galaxy Z Flip, and Galaxy Z Fold 2, respectively.
Budget Samsung foldable smartphone coming in two variants
SamMobile also says that it received some additional details about this device. The phone will, allegedly, come in 64GB and 128GB storage variants. Color options have also been shared.
This phone will be available in black, green, and blue color options, if the source is to be believed. The source does not that it received this information from a source that it “can’t throw our weight behind”.
We would usually tell you to take this rumor with a grain of salt, due to this comment, but the device already surfaced on Wi-Fi Alliance. That certification more or less confirms its existence. The model number fits.
We’re just not sure if this will be a smartphone that folds, or a tablet that folds. In other words, whether it will belong in the ‘Z Flip’ or the ‘Z Fold’ lineup.
Samsung could actually use the Z Flip or Z Fold branding for the phone, and also the word ‘Lite’ or something of the sort. We’re only guessing, it’s possible that the company will come up with a whole new naming for this phone.
A new naming scheme for this lineup may not be a bad idea
If Samsung plans to continue releasing more affordable foldable phones, coming up with a brand new naming scheme may not be such a bad idea. We’ll see what the company is planning.
Now, in terms of the launch date for this smartphone, well, we don’t have any information just yet. Considering that it already popped up on the Wi-Fi Alliance, it’s quite possible it will be released quite soon.
If I had to guess, I’d say it’s coming before the end of the year for sure. If priced at around $600-700, Samsung could peak interesting in a lot of consumers. The question is, is that doable. We’ll see what price range is the company aiming for, this bracket may be too optimistic.
