The Google Pixel 5 battery life may not be an improvement over what Pixel 4 offered, at all. Well, at least if the newest leak is to be believed, as some information about the Pixel 5 specifications surfaced.
This information comes from Jason C, who shared the information on Twitter. This is not exactly a source that we’ve seen often, so take the information he shared with a grain of salt.
What gives it some credit, is that Ross Young, a well-known display analyst, responded to his tweet. In any case, let’s tackle one thing at a time, shall we. Let’s talk about the initial tweet first.
The Google Pixel 5 battery life will probably be quite bad if this information is accurate
The source is claiming that the Google Pixel 5 will feature a 3,080mAh battery, and that is a fairly small battery considering what the phone’s display is expected to be. The Google Pixel 5 may offer really poor battery life as a result.
The source claims that Google believes it can do a great job when it comes to battery optimization, similar to Apple. It also claims that the phone may offer 90Hz refresh rate display, and a QHD+ display resolution.
Ross Young replied to his tweet, sharing some more information about the display. Mr. Young claims that the phone will feature a 6.67-inch QHD+ display, with a 3300 x 1440 resolution.
Now, if that ends up being true, and the phone ends up sporting that display and such a small battery, battery life will almost certainly be an issue. The Google Pixel 4 was a true disappointment in that regard.
The Google Pixel 4 was a true disappointment when it comes to battery life
To be quite honest, the Google Pixel 4 XL did not offer great battery life either, but it was fairly better than the Pixel 4. We do hope that this leak is inaccurate, as such a display and SoC deserve a considerably larger battery pack.
Just for comparison’s sake, the OnePlus 7 Pro, last year’s flagship, which offered a 6.67-inch QHD+ display with a 90Hz refresh rate, also offered a 4,000mAh battery. That is 25-percent larger than what Google plans to use here.
Once again, we do hope that this information is inaccurate, as Google should utilize at least a 4,000mAh battery here. That phone is large enough for such a battery, and with proper optimizations, the Pixel 5 could actually offered great battery life.
The Google Pixel 5 is expected to arrive in October, so there’s still some time until that happens. Based on the rumors and leaks we’ve seen thus far, the phone will arrive in one variant only. We won’t be seeing a smaller Pixel 5 this time around. Things may change, though.
