Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Book Flex and Galaxy Ion laptops at the Samsung Developer Conference (SDC) held in October last year. According to the company’s latest trademark filed at the EUIPO (European Union Intellectual Property Office), Samsung is currently working on a new 5G laptop called Galaxy Book Flex 5G.
The company filed a patent under the Class 9 category for the name “Samsung Book Flex 5G.” Apart from its name, there is no other information available currently. Like the last year’s model, the new Galaxy Book Flex 5G could also be a 2-in-1 convertible.
Samsung Galaxy Book Flex 5G in the works
The company has been launching 5G smartphones and tablets from the last couple of years. This week Samsung launched the Galaxy Note 20, Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, Galaxy Tab S7, Galaxy Tab S7+, and Galaxy Z Fold 2. Obviously, all these five products come with 5G support.
However, the upcoming Galaxy Book Flex 5G will be Samsung’s first-ever 5G laptop. Since 5G is not widespread yet, it could be made available only in selected markets. The Lenovo Flex 5G powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx Compute Platform is the world’s first 5G laptop.
This 2-in-1 convertible from Lenovo uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon X55 5G modem for its 5G connectivity. As per the leaks, the Galaxy Book Flex 5G could use the Intel chip featuring MediaTek’s 5G modem. In terms of aesthetics, it should likely be sleek and compact.
Samsung might also launch an upgraded Galaxy Book Ion
As the Galaxy Book Flex supports S Pen, the 5G variant should be getting the newly introduced S Pen with ultra-low latency of just 9ms. With the collaboration between Microsoft and Samsung, Galaxy smartphone users can access the Android apps on their Windows 10 laptops.
Alongside the Galaxy Book Flex 5G, we can also expect to see a 2020 variant of the Galax Book Ion. The Galaxy Book Flex and Galaxy Book Ion launched in 2019 are the world’s first laptops to sport QLED displays. These also supported the Wireless PowerShare feature to wirelessly charge other Qi-compatible products.
The Galaxy Book Flex is available in two variants featuring 13.3-inch and 15.6-inch displays. The other specifications include 10th Gen Intel Core processors, AKG-tuned stereo speakers, fingerprint reader, 360-degree hinge, and Wi-Fi 6 support.
While Samsung is yet to announce the dates for the SDC 2020, it will most likely happen in October. The company might announce the new Samsung Galaxy Book Flex 5G along with other new laptops at the event.
