Google is reportedly upgrading a key spec on the Pixel 5, and it’s one that we are all going to love.

According to Roland Quandt, who has a pretty good track record with leaks, the Pixel 5 (and presumably the Pixel 4a 5G) will come with 128GB of storage. Quandt does also say in the tweet that “if there are 64GB models, I haven’t seen them.” So it is possible that we could see a 64GB model, but it’s unlikely.

This had to happen though, since the Pixel 4a is only available in a 128GB configuration. Google can’t sell a more expensive phone with less storage than its cheaper smartphone.

6GB/128GB is likely the default configuration for 2020 Pixel phones

The Pixel 4a comes with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, and it looks like that might be the default configuration for 2020 Pixel smartphones.

Though, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Pixel 5 come with more RAM, to differentiate it from the Pixel 4a 5G which has the same processor but will be about $150-$200 less. Not to mention the fact that 5G smartphones do need more RAM.

Google does like to lean on the lower-end of RAM. In fact, it stuck with 4GB of RAM all the way to the Pixel 3. Which had a lot of issues with the phone killing apps in the background. Instead of keeping things like music running in the background. And it finally went to 6GB with the Pixel 4 last fall.

Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5 is likely coming September 30

According to recent leaks, it looks like the Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5 are going to be announced on September 30. Or it could be released that day. Front Page Tech’s Jon Prosser had noted earlier this week that they are seeing these dates in the system. Which likely means that is the day that the devices will be available to buy.

The two devices are very similar, and it looks like the Pixel 4a 5G is going to be the smaller of the two, with the Pixel 5 being the larger one. We’ve also heard from some display insiders, that Google is using a 6.67-inch display on the Pixel 5. Which is a pretty large display, even compared to the Pixel 4 XL. Which had a 6.3-inch display. But remember, Google is likely doing a hole-punch display, like with the Pixel 4a. So it might be just a bit bigger than the Pixel 4 XL, with that forehead going away.
