You Can Reserve The Galaxy Z Fold 2 Today, Pre-Orders Open September 1

Even though Samsung didn’t share a whole lot of details about the Galaxy Z Fold 2 today at Unpacked, you can reserve your device today.

Pre-orders for the Galaxy Z Fold 2 will start on September 1. But if you reserve your device now, you will likely get a small discount towards your Galaxy Z Fold 2 purchase next month. Reserving the Galaxy Note 20, got everyone a $50 discount. So we’d expect the same with the Galaxy Z Fold 2.

Galaxy Z Fold 2 is a major upgrade

As expected, since the Galaxy Z Fold 2 is now a second-generation foldable device, it is a huge upgrade over the original.

Samsung has included a bunch of new upgrades here. Including a new hinge that has bristles inside to keep dirt out of the hinge. Since the phone still doesn’t fold flat. This is something we saw with the Galaxy Z Flip earlier this year.

On top of that, the Galaxy Z Fold 2  also features larger inside and outside displays. So now there is a 6.2-inch display on the outside, and a 7.6-inch internal display. Both are using Samsung’s Infinity-O displays. Which means that there’s no more notch and almost bezel-less design. It uses a hole punch for the cameras too.

Now, Samsung did not mention specs, but we are expecting it to sport the Snapdragon 865+ chipset with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. There will likely be cameras similar to what the Galaxy S20+ or S20 Ultra sport. But we’ll find out more next month.

The price will not be cheap

The original Galaxy Fold was $1980 plus tax. That’s not a cheap smartphone, and while we expect the Galaxy Z Fold 2  to be cheaper, it won’t be “cheap”. It’ll likely be around $1500-$1700. Though we’ll also find that out next month.

Foldables are not cheap because the components are not cheap and are still very new. On top of that, there’s a lot of R&D needed to get a foldable device made. So don’t expect these devices to be cheap or under $1,000 anytime soon.

Part of the reason for the higher price, is so that not everyone buys one. Since foldables are more fragile than regular smartphones, this is a good idea for Samsung. And it ensures that only the biggest fans get the device.

Samsung says that it will give us more details on everything about the Galaxy Z Fold 2  on September 1. And pre-orders will also launch that day.
