Verizon Rolls Out August Security Patch Update For OnePlus & LG Smartphones

Verizon is rolling out the August 2020 security patch update for a bunch of flagship smartphones. The list includes the OnePlus 8 5G UW, LG V60 ThinQ 5G, LG V20, & LG G5. Interestingly, the four-year-old LG G5 and LG V20 are still receiving the Android security patch updates.

Recently, OEMs are competing with Google to roll out the security patch updates as soon as possible. The carrier-locked devices are at least getting them in the same month, better late than never.  For the LG G5 and LG V20, the update comes in the form of System Update 15 and System Update 14 respectively.

As for the two 5G smartphones are concerned, the update also includes some noticeable changes. The LG V60 ThinQ 5G gets the System Update 3 with the software version V600VM10g. After the latest update, the “5G UWB” icon in the notification bar will be replaced by “5G UW.”

Moreover, the Wi-Fi Calling Emergency Address List now includes the District of Columbia (DC). Since these new OTA updates roll out in a phased manner, it will take a few days to reach all the smartphones. However, the interested LG users can manually check for the latest update by going to About Phone > Software updates > Check for Update.

If there is a new update available, download and install it to experience the latest software version. Speaking of the Verizon-exclusive OnePlus 8 5G UW, the latest update comes with the software version IN2019_15_200813. Apart from the latest security patch, the update also improves the Wi-Fi connectivity and includes new signal icons.

The unlocked OnePlus 8 in the US received its August security patch a couple of weeks back. Also, the unlocked devices are currently running on the latest OxygenOS 10.5.12. Whereas, Verizon’s OnePlus 8 runs presently on OxygenOS 10.5.4. Verizon recently stopped charging a fee from its users for accessing its 5G Ultra Wideband network.

The company used to levy a $10 fee on top of the usual monthly bill. However, the company offers better 5G speeds than its competitors. It’s because Verizon is the only US carrier to roll out the 5G services using the high-frequency mmWave spectrum. Eventually, the mmWave technology has its own limits like limited coverage area and sensitivity to the obstacles.

According to the recent Opensignal report, the average 5G download speed on Verizon’s network is 494.7 Mbps. This is the highest among all the US 5G carriers which also includes AT&T and T-Mobile. Addiotna terms of coverage, the mmWave spectrum limits.
