Over the last couple of years, Huawei has launched a couple of foldable smartphones and also patented several futuristic-looking devices. As per the new patent filing spotted by LetsGoDigital, Huawei seems to be currently working on a new smartphone featuring a wrap-around display.
The company filed this new design patent with the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA). According to the patent filed on March 17 and published on September 11, the design of the device looks quite similar to the Mate X and Mate Xs foldable smartphones — minus the foldable mechanism.

Like the current-gen flagship smartphones, it sports an edge-to-edge display with minimal bezels on the front. However, the display will be wrapped around to the back of the device from the left side. On the right edge, it will sport both the power button and volume rocker.
While the company already got rid of the hardware buttons on some of its flagship devices, the reference design in this listing still features them. As seen on the Xiaomi Mi MIX Alpha concept smartphone unveiled in 2019, Huawei could also opt for a similar flexible OLED display.
There will be no front cameras on this device
As the left edge of the device is completely covered by the display, the company has to make software tweaks to avoid accidental touches. With the dual-sided display, Huawei will be skipping the front camera sensors. The tiny strip on the rear will be holding the camera sensors and LED flash.
Moreover, the camera setup on the back of the device also serves as the front camera. So, the high megapixel cameras can capture beautiful selfies. As with all patents, there’s no guarantee that this design will be used for its next upcoming smartphone. Based on the rumors, Huawei’s next foldable smartphone might come with an in-folding design.
Furthermore, it might look similar to the Galaxy Z Flip clamshell foldable smartphone. The already launched Mate X and Mate Xs foldable smartphones come with a plastic display. Both these devices are more prone to scratches and damage than the foldables with in-folding design.
In the coming weeks, Huawei will also launch the flagship Mate 40 and Mate 40 Pro smartphones powered by the all-new 5nm Kirin chipset. The company could launch its new foldable smartphone during the same launch event. However, some leaks suggest the new foldable from Huawei will launch separately later this year.
