LG teased its upcoming smartphone with a rollable display, and you probably missed it. This happened during the LG Wing announcement yesterday, actually.
LG teased its first smartphone with rollable display via a short video clip
This teaser was spotted by a Twitter user, who shared a short clip of it. It’s included below this paragraph, and if you take a look at it, it’ll be obvious what LG is teasing here. As you can see, a display pulls out of the phone’s body here, even though it’s very subtle.

This is quite probably the company’s second ‘Explorer Device’. LG launched its Explorer program with the LG Wing, and it already seems to be teasing the second device that will be a part of that program.
The whole point of this program is to innovate, release new devices with new form factors, and so on. This rollable device is not unexpected, as we’ve already seen several patents that LG submitted over time.
A well-known analyst, Ross Young, did say that the company’s first rollable smartphone is coming in H1 2021. Therefore, we won’t have to wait that long to see this phone.
This handset is allegedly codenamed ‘Project B’
LG’s rollable smartphone is allegedly codenamed ‘Project B’, by the way. The phone will feature a display made by BOE, and it will be an OLED display. Speaking of which, the LG Wing display was also made by BOE, according to Mr. Young.
LG’s first rollable display is expected to expand from 6.8 to 7.4-inches, if rumors are to be believed. We do not know what exactly will the device look at, though, at least not yet.
Considering that this phone is expected to arrive in the first half of next year, we’ll probably see some leaks in the coming months. LG seems to be back to its old ways, innovation, and odd-looking devices.
That’s certainly not a bad thing. The initial reactions to the LG Wing seem to be positive, and more such devices certainly couldn’t hurt the industry. We need more phones that will excite us, not just regular old slabs of glass and metal.
The LG Wing certainly is one such phone, which comes with two displays, and the first one swivels. You can essentially use that large display in a landscape form, while the bottom one remains in a vertical form.
There are a number of different use cases for such displays, and we do believe that LG will come up with many more. It will be interesting to see how well will the LG Wing sell, but as already mentioned, the initial reactions are quite positive.
