HMD Global has now officially launched its Nokia 3.4 and Nokia 2.4. The devices were announced alongside the Nokia 8.3 5G — Nokia’s first US 5G handset.
Each handset brings substantial improvements over its predecessor while remaining true to Nokia’s Android One promise. That means each delivers a stock experience with 2-years worth of Android OS updates, starting with an update to Android 11. And that’s in addition to 3-years of security updates.
Nokia 2.4 delivers a mass of features on a budget
Of course, the Nokia 2.4 will be the more affordable of the new handsets while the 3.4 is more powerful. But that certainly doesn’t mean the 6.5-inch HD+ Nokia 2.4 should be written off.
The handset is built around a cinematic-ready 21:9 format with a waterdrop notch, just for starters. And that’s a first for the 2-series from the company. That display is packed into a 3D nano-textured frame in three colors — Fjord, Dusk, and Charcoal — with a fingerprint scanner at the back. The front-facing 5-megapixel fixed-focus, f/2.4 3P lens, conversely, also works for AI-powered face unlocking.
Around the back of the device, Nokia includes two camera sensors. Those are a 13-megapixel primary sensor with an f/2.2 aperture and 5P lens coupled with a 2-megapixel depth sensor. A single LED flash is included alongside those in a vertical orientation. Both Night Mode and Portrait mode are part of that camera bundle on the software side.
For the first time in the 2-series’ history, the Nokia 2.4 includes advanced post-editing photo features as well.
Under the hood, Nokia includes a budget-friendly but capable MediaTek Helio P22 in this 4G handset. HMD backed that up with 2GB RAM and 32GB of MicroSD card-expandable storage up to 512GB. A 4,500mAh battery keeps that hardware running up to 2-days, HMD Global says, with Micro USB charging and OTG capabilities tossed into the mix alongside a 3.5mm audio jack.
Other key features include a dedicated Google Assistant button, IPX2 water resistance, an FM receiver, and NFC for tap-to-pay.
HMD Global Nokia 3.4 is the most powerful 3- or 4-series Nokia yet
Nokia 3.4, conversely, steps things forward quite a bit, starting with its Snapdragon 460 SoC. That’s a chipset that’s 70-percent more powerful than the chin previous Nokia 3-series devices, HMD Global notes. But that does mean the Nokia 3.4 is a 4G handset. HMD Global backed that chip up with 3GB memory and 64GB storage. That’s expandable, just like the Nokia 2.4, up to 512GB via MicroSD card.
A 4,000mAh battery powers the Nokia 3.4 for up to 2-days, according to the company. The battery charges via USB-C instead of micro USB. A 3.5mm audio jack is the other port provided. And a Google Assistant dedicated hardware key completes the exterior interactive components aside from the usual volume and power keys.
All told, this is the most powerful 3- or 4-series smartphone ever made by Nokia.
The hardware components listed above at packed under a 6.39-inch frame in an iridescent Fjord, Dusk, or Charcoal hue. As with the Nokia 2.4, that’s an HD+ panel. But here, HMD utilized a hole-in display for the front camera — rated at 8-megapixels. That’s another first for the 3-series.
Around the back of the device, users are given a tri-camera array with a 13-megapixel main snapper, 2-megapixel depth sensor, and 5-megapixel ultra-wide lenses. Night mode and portrait mode, as well as advanced photo-editing, make a return here, as with the Nokia 2.4.
Pricing and availability
Now, HMD Global says the Nokia 2.4 will become available as of September 23. That’s with a pre-order starting cost of just $139 via Amazon. It’ll be sold within the following weeks at Best Buy as well.
In either case, the handset will be available in three colors. Those are Fjord, Dusk, and Charcoal. As might be expected from the naming conventions here, Fjord is a light blue variant with cyan tints fading to purple. Dusk is a light purple to red gradient. And charcoal is a deep gray tone with hints of gold toward the bottom. Nokia 2.4 will be sold unlocked around the globe in each variation.
Nokia 3.4 will be available globally as an unlocked device as well and will follow a similar release pattern. But it’ll be priced a bit higher to match its specs and it will be available at a somewhat less certain time “later this fall.”
The starting cost for the Nokia 3.4 will be $179 for the same colors as the 2.4 with one noteworthy exception. Each of those colors is not a standard gradient for Nokia 3.4, with an iridescent finish that shifts in different lighting.
