Samsung Announces The Galaxy A42 – It's Cheapest 5G Phone Yet

Samsung is expanding its 5G smartphone lineup with the Galaxy A42 5G. It is the Korean company’s cheapest 5G phone yet, and third mid-range 5G offering overall, following the launch of the Galaxy A51 5G and Galaxy A71 5G earlier this year.

The new smartphone was announced at the company’s virtual Life Unstoppable event on Wednesday. The event also saw Samsung announce the budget Galaxy Tab A7, Galaxy Fit 2, and the Wireless Charging Trio.

Galaxy A42 5G specifications

While Samsung revealed detailed specifications of the other devices announced at the Life Unstoppable event, Samsung only shared a few images of the Galaxy A42 5G. However, we still do know a lot about the handset thanks to all those leaks and rumors in the past.

Samsung’s most affordable 5G smartphone sports a 6.6-inch Super AMOLED display with a tiny U-shaped notch at the center. If you recall, the Galaxy A40 and A41 were both compact phones featuring 5.9-inch and 6.1-inch displays respectively. However, their successor is anything but compact and that’s likely because of it being 5G-capable.

Samsung is putting a big display on the Galaxy A42 5G so customers can enjoy the best gaming and video watching experience over the blazing speeds of the next-generation wireless networks. The display resolution should be at least 1080p, if not more.

Under the hood of this phone is likely the Qualcomm Snapdragon 690 chipset with at least 4GB of RAM. The phone may come in 64GB and 128GB storage variants, expandable via a MicroSD Card.

On the back of the Galaxy A42 5G is a quad-camera setup in new, square-shaped housing. Samsung’s recent mid-range phones with four cameras on the back all have an L-shaped camera pattern. The back panel is also getting a new design, with four differently colored patterns.

While Samsung didn’t reveal camera specs of this phone during the announcement, reports claim there’ll be a 48-megapixel primary sensor and a 5-megapixel depth sensor. Details on the other two rear cameras and the front-facing camera are still a mystery.

A 5,000mAh battery with at least 15W fast charging and an in-display fingerprint sensor are some other rumored features on the Galaxy A42 5G.

Price and availability

As mentioned earlier, Samsung hasn’t revealed any details about this handset yet. The company says it’ll announce the handset’s specifications along with its pricing and availability details closer to its launch. However, we can safely assume from its name and position in the company’s smartphone lineup that the Galaxy A42 5G will be Samsung’s cheapest 5G smartphone when it hits the market later this year.
