The 2018-announced Android-powered $6,000 Zeiss ZX1 camera is now up for pre-order on its official website. That’s no typo. The camera actually costs a whopping $6,000.
Android smartphone cameras are always taking the game up-a-notch with each releasing device. They have become so better than a mid-ranger smartphone also captures decent images.
However, the camera performance of these Android smartphones still lags behind mirrorless or DSLR cameras. It should be no argument, as smartphones are more than just cameras.
They are high-tech entertainment gadgets that are now used for photography, social media, entertainment, calls, messages, surfing the internet, etc.
So, embedding high-end camera tech is not possible on such a small form-factor. On the other hand, DSLRs and mirrorless cameras are meant to do a specific thing, i.e. capture images.
Coming back to the Zeiss ZX1 camera, it is not a smartphone. It is one hell of a high-end camera that uses the Android OS or sort of Android OS as a platform for its operating system.
Considering the versatility and the ease of use Android OS provides, this could be a compelling proposition for future cameras.
Zeiss ZX1 features a 37.4 MP sensor with a fixed 35mm Distagon f/2.0 lens
Good thing is that this, what should have arrived back in May 2019 camera, will now soon be making its way into the hands of those who are eagerly waiting for it.
Talk about the features of the Zeiss ZX1, it comes with a 37.4 MP camera. Besides, it has a fixed 35mm Distagon f/2.0 lens. And guess what, you will be able to run the Abode Lightroom CC to the 4.3-inch 1280 by the 720-pixel rear display.
Thanks to the partnership between Adobe and Zeiss, users of the Zeiss ZX1 will have Adobe Lightroom at their quick disposal. Moreover, there is a 512GB SSD built-in for on-board storage as well.
There is also an 0.74x Full HD OLED electronic viewfinder. It houses a 3190 mAh battery and the updates for the camera will arrive via OTA. Apparently, we also do not have any info on which version of Android OS this camera will run on.
Android 11 maybe? Who knows? The idea of running all Android apps and having access to Google Play Store may sound compelling, but it still does not justify the price tag of $6,000.
If the camera outperforms its DSLR and mirrorless counterparts by a fair margin, then only this price tag looks sane. Note that the B&HPhoto lists Zeiss ZX1 as coming soon, meaning that we do not have a release date yet.
But by coming soon, we speculate it to arrive pretty soon. We will have our eyes on this device once it makes its way to the market.
