Google introduced Camera Go earlier this year in order to bring its photography prowess to low-end, Android Go smartphones. The company is now making the experience better by adding a dedicated Night Mode to the camera app. This brings enhanced low-light photography to affordable Android smartphones. Devices packing low-end hardware will now be able to capture brighter images even in dimly-lit environments.
While Night Mode on Camera Go won’t surely equal Google’s Night Sight capabilities found in its Pixel phones, it will work in very much the same way. The feature will automatically capture multiple simultaneous shots when you press the shutter and merge them to produce clearer photos. That’s how the camera night mode in any other high-end Android phone works. It captures multiple frames and merges them to draw out details and dynamic range.
“We want to provide people using entry-level smartphones access to a high-quality camera experience,” said Joris van Mens, Product Manager at Google’s Next Billion Users initiative. “For many, capturing moments in low light is a matter of trial and error. Taking night-time photos requires them to experiment with complicated settings. With Night Mode in Nokia 1.3 and other devices, preserving memories and capturing great photos will be easier for everyone.”
Google adds a dedicated Night Mode to Camera Go
Camera Go debuted with the Nokia 1.3 in March this year. Google has since expanded the availability to several other Android Go-powered phones. The app comes pre-installed on newer affordable Android devices.
Optimized for devices with just 1GB of RAM, Camera Go features a portrait mode to go along with its clean and simple interface. It also tracks the device’s storage and lets users know how many more photos they can capture. Users can also quickly clear up space so they don’t run out of storage unexpectedly.
Night Mode and HDR support were notable omissions when Google introduced Camera Go earlier this year. But it hasn’t been a too-long wait. Night Mode on Camera Go is now rolling out for the Nokia 1.3 in 27 major countries.
Users will be able to gain Night Mode by updating the Camera Go app from the Play Store. The Wiko Y61, Wiko Y81, and various other Android Go phones will also be getting Night Mode support in the coming months.
Google also promises to bring the “power of computational photography” to low-end devices by adding HDR support to Camera Go. This feature will be available “later this year.”
