The Chromebook layout has changed slightly with the button that replaces the caps lock being changed to the “Everything” button. As reported by 9to5Google, this is the first time the button has got a formal name in a slight tweak.
Chromebooks have been in the news quite a lot during October with a number of new features and perks announce. Most recently, it emerged that a new dark mode was coming to Chromebooks.
However, this feature will not be ready for some time so not something for users to get excited about just yet. Some new Chromebook perks have been announced through which should peak the interest of users.
These included 90-Day Trials For Stadia & GeForce NOW which for many would be reason enough to entice them. Although there were a few caveats that made claiming these perks a bit more complex than they really needed to be.
The introduction of the “Everything”, however, does certainly sound exciting. The question is whether it actually offers an awful lot more other than just a fancy name.
Google names replaced button “Everything” key
This appears to be a new branding of the multi-purpose button on the left side of the keyboard to make it a bit more exciting. In the past, this button has been known more as the search key or the launcher key but now has a proper official name.
It must be said, that the name “Everything” was probably not what many expected. However, it does make some sense seeing as this button does a range of different things. Any more specific name would probably fail to encompass all that it offered.
For example, tapping the key opens up a search bar which works for Google in general as well as finding apps on the Chromebook itself. Also, if you swipe up on that section an app drawer will open as well.
In addition, on Chromebook’s other than Google’s own it operates a partial shortcut to open up Assistant. Google has made a statement commenting on the new naming of the button.
It said that the Chromebook “Everything” button “can help you find your things fast. Use this button to search Google, your Drive, apps, files and more — all from one place”.
The announcement goes onto explain the rationale behind the name. Supposedly it “was chosen to reflect user feedback”. Overall, it seems a positive and somewhat exciting move which Chromebook’s can use to market their uniqueness a little bit more effectively.
