Last month, Google rolled out a new beta update for the Google Pay India app. The latest version of the app is written from scratch in Flutter, Google’s open-source mobile app development framework. According to XDA’s Mishaal Rahman, Google will globally replace the current Google Pay app with the Flutter version in the near future.
If you didn’t, the Google Pay app in India is entirely different from the international version. It was initially launched as Google Tez and is built for India’s own UPI (Unified Payments Interface) based payments. Unlike the international version, Tez doesn’t support NFC-based payments yet.
Google Pay on Flutter to soon launch for everyone
With Flutter, a single codebase can run the app on all the platforms including Android, iOS, Mac, Windows, and more. The company will be using Dart as the programming language for the Flutter version. It helps in offering uniform experience on both the Android and the iOS versions of the Google Pay app.
According to the company, Google Pay will be one of the largest deployments on this new platform when it launches the international app built on Flutter. While Google also officially teased to migrate the Google Pay app to Flutter, there’s no ETA for that just yet.
Speaking of the changes, users might not notice much in terms of performance. However, there are many visual changes in the Flutter version of the Google Pay India app. The significant design changes can be found in the Offers and Rewards sections. Even the settings page receives redesigned UI with a minimal approach.
It will help in faster deployment of new features
Eventually, going with Flutter app development will surely benefit the developers. Notably, it will help them built new features in a very short time. Unlike earlier, all the platforms can simultaneously get the new changes.
Coming to the Google Pay India app, the company is also started rolling out the Tap & Pay feature. Users can finally link their debit and credit cards for making payments or shopping online. Currently, only a couple of Indian banks support Tap & Pay feature.
While Axis Bank users can use both their credit and debit cards, the SBI users can only link their credit cards. Unlike in the Western markets, the NFC payment terminals are difficult to find in India.
On other hand, Samsung Pay supports both NFC and MST for using it at any payment terminal. While Google Pay is widely popular for UPI-based payments, it might be hard for the company to replicate similar success with card payments. It is because Google Pay’s Tap & Pay only works with NFC terminals.
Latest version of the Google Pay app added a new screen that prompts users to "download the new Google Pay."
