Huawei has just introduced its new flagships, the Mate 40 series. The company announced three smartphones as part of this series, the Mate 40, Mate 40 Pro, and Mate 40 Pro+. In addition to those, a special edition Porsche Design Huawei Mate 40 RS was also announced.
Just to be clear, neither of these devices ship with Google services. All three do come with Android 10, though, and Huawei’s EMUI 11 skin on top of it. Huawei still didn’t release full spec sheets, not even after the event. We will share everything we know thus far, though, and there’s plenty to go through.
The Huawei Mate 40 Pro+ is the only variant that includes ceramic build
It is worth noting that while the Mate 40, Mate 40 Pro, and Porsche Design Huawei Mate 40 RS are made out of metal and glass, the Mate 40 Pro+ comes with a ceramic + metal build. The Huawei Mate 40 is the only one that comes with a single camera hole in the display, all the other variants have a pill-shaped hole. All devices include curved displays.
All devices are fueled by the Kirin 9000 SoC. That chip is made using a 5nm process, and it comes with four Cortex-A77, and four A55 cores. The A77 cores are clocked at 3.13GHz, which is kind of a record when it comes to mobile chips. The Mali-G78 GPU with 24 cores is also a part of the package.
This processor does come with an integrated 5G modem. That goes for all four devices, by the way. The WiFi 6+ is also included, to complete the Mate 40 excellence in the connectivity field.
Now, the Huawei Mate 40 Pro and Pro+ are quite similar. Both include curved displays, and similar camera setups, but not identical ones. Both phones feature a 50-megapixel main camera (1/1.28-inch sensor), that goes for the Mate 40 as well. That sensor does support omnidirectional autofocus, and has an f/1.9 lens on it. OIS is also supported here, while pixels are 1.22um in terms of size.
3,840 FPS slow-motion video is supported
This camera can shoot 4K video at 60FPS, and 1080p slow-motion video at 480 FPS. There is also a 3,840 FPS mode, if you want everything to move extremely slowly. This mode can be utilized at 720 FPS.
20-megapixel cine camera is also included, with an f/1.8 aperture. This is an ultra-wide angle lens, by the way. A 12-megapixel periscope camera is also included, with a 125mm periscope lens. 5x zoom over the main camera is also possible. That periscope camera has an f/3.4 aperture, and OIS support.
Now, some of you are probably wondering what the Mate 40 Pro+ brings to the table. Well, its periscope lens goes up to 10x optical zoom. That module comes with an 8-megapixel sensor and an f/4.4 aperture. A 12-megapixel camera is also included here, for mid-range zoom. Laser autofocus is also included here. ToF camera for depth sensing is also located on the back of this phone. So, we’re looking at five cameras altogether, as shown below.
A 13-megapixel front-facing camera is included on both phones, and it’s located next to the depth sensor. That is pretty much everything you need to know about these cameras.
The Huawei Mate 40 Pro, Pro+, and Porsche Design model feature 6.76-inch displays
Both of these phones feature 6.76-inch 2772 x 1344 OLED displays. Their displays are heavily curved (88-degree), and these are 90Hz displays. 240Hz touch sampling is implemented here, which is an improvement over the P40 series.
A 4,400mAh battery can be found on the inside, while it can be recharged using 66W fast wired charging. 50W wireless charging is also included, and so is reverse wireless charging. Stereo speakers are a part of the package as well.
The Porsche Design Huawei Mate 40 RS is basically the same as the Mate 40 Pro, but it comes with a slightly different design. Its camera module on the back is not exactly circular, and there’s also Porsche Design’s branding on the device. It looks a bit different than the Mate 40 Pro, and it also comes in a different color variant.
Speaking of which, the Huawei Mate 40 and 40 Pro come in Black, White, Mystic Silver, Yellow, and Green colors. The Mate 40 Pro+, on the other hand, comes in Ceramic Black and Ceramic White.
Now, in terms of pricing. The Huawei Mate 40 starts at €899 (8GB RAM + 128GB of storage). The Mate 40 Pro is priced at €1,199, and it comes with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. The Mate 40 Pro+ will be available for €1,399 (12GB of RAM + 256GB of storage). The special edition Porsche Design Huawei Mate 40 RS is considerably more expensive at €2,295 (12GB of RAM + 512GB of storage).
