LG might altogether skip launching the smartphone with the upcoming Snapdragon 875 SoC in 2021, according to a new report. The company skipped launching the flagship G-series smartphone in the first half of 2020. Instead, it launched the LG V60 ThinQ powered by the flagship Snapdragon 865 SoC.
Looks like it will be the only flagship smartphone from LG this year. As per the source, the company hasn’t placed an order for the next-gen flagship chipset from Qualcomm. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 875 SoC will be unveiled in the first week of December as the successor to the current-gen Snapdragon 865.
LG to skip using the upcoming Snapdragon 875 SoC
The Snapdragon 875-powered smartphones from brands like Samsung and Xiaomi will be hitting the markets in the first quarter of 2021. Instead of launching a flagship smartphone, LG might be eyeing a new mid-range smartphone as the successor to the LG Velvet.
LG even placed a large order for the Snapdragon 775 SoC. To date, Qualcomm hasn’t revealed any details about this new mid-range chipset. Likely, it will be the successor to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G. LG Velvet, the most popular LG smartphone launched in 2020, comes powered by the Snapdragon 765G SoC.
The company even used the same mid-range chipset in LG Wing, the world’s first 5G swivel smartphone. With flagship smartphones starting at over $1,000, LG is targetting the sub $600 segment. At $599, LG Velvet is one of the best mid-range smartphones.
No flagship smartphone from LG in 2021?
Unlike the competition, LG Velvet comes with a premium-looking design and flagship-grade build quality. Moreover, the device also supports 5G making it future-proof. In 2021, the successor to the LG Velvet is rumored to feature the unannounced Snapdragon 775 SoC.
The Snapdragon 7-series chipsets are very much capable of offering a smooth experience for most of the users. While 2020 marked the end of the flagship G-series, there could be no new V-series from LG starting 2021.
However, there will be more concept smartphones coming from LG under its newly announced “Explore Project.” While LG Wing is the first product under this project, the company also teased the second product to come with an extendable display. Meanwhile, the company should continue launching decent mid-range 5G smartphones to increase its market share.
The recent reports revealed the company’s global smartphone market share to be less than 1 percent. As per the company’s shift in strategy, the mid-range smartphones will likely be the key for the company to have any competitive edge.
