Surface Duo Users Report A Major Issue With The Device's Hinge

The much-awaited Microsoft Surface Duo finally arrived last month but it hasn’t been a smooth ride so far. Early adopters have reported several issues with the device over the past month. However, none more serious than a newly reported issue with the device’s revolutionary hinge.

Several Surface Duo users have taken to Reddit to report an issue with the very part that makes the device what it is. Users are feeling the hinge to be “gritty” to an extent where they need to push down the screens in order to make them lie flat.

It’s only the top hinge that’s reportedly malfunctioning. One user said it felt like the hinge would break on unfolding the device. There’s seemingly something wrong with the top hinge that’s preventing the two halves of the phone from lining up with each other.

It’s unclear how widespread the issue is, and whether it’s caused by some mistake on the user’s side. Maybe there’s a big-enough gap around the top hinge and some sand or dust particles have slipped through. We all know what happened with the Samsung Galaxy Fold last year. The Korean company had to call back all the review units after multiple reports of breakage, crease, and malfunctioning of the display. The gap around the hinge was allowing dust particles to enter and reach under the display.

Microsoft has yet to acknowledge this issue with the Surface Duo, though. If there’s any major manufacturing defect, then the company may be looking at another tough entry into the smartphone market. Just to remind you, the Surface Duo is the Windows giant’s first Android smartphone. It’s also the company’s second attempt at establishing itself in the smartphone industry. It had a failed first venture with Windows phone a few years back.

This hinge issue is the latest reported by Surface Duo users

This hinge issue is the latest major problem Surface Duo users have reported over the past few weeks. There have been reports of cracks around the USB-C charging port with users calling it to be a problem caused by the device’s thin frame.

Some users have also reported problems with the Surface Duo’s 11-megapixel camera, while a few others say the device isn’t recognizing touch gestures on the screen. Other reported issues include weak signal reception and lags while dragging an app between the Duo’s two 5.6-inch AMOLED displays.

This is really unfortunate given all the hype around the phone, and its $1,399.99 price tag, of course. It’s $1,499.99 if you consider the 256GB version. Microsoft did recently push an update promising call stability and experience, touch stability, as well as overall device stability. However, it may now have more issues to look at. Hopefully, the company will come up with an official statement about this grievous hinge issue soon.
