Galaxy Z Fold 2 Proves It's Durable, But There's Room For Improvement

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 has proven to be durable, but there’s still room for improvement. The phone found its way to the hands of Zack, a man behind the JerryRigEverything YouTube channel.

As most of you know by now, Zack’s thing is to test various phones to see how durable they are. He also does teardowns of those phones later on, well, some of them. In this particular case, he decided to test the durability of the Galaxy Z Fold 2.

He wanted to see if there are any improvements over the first variant, so he tested it as he would any other phone. Now, the first test Zack conducted is a scratch test, as per usual.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 is durable, there are various improvements compared to the Galaxy Fold

He tackled the outer display first. That is a glass display, which is protected by the Gorilla Glass 6. As expected, it started to scratch at a level 6 (pick), with deeper grooves at a level 7. Nothing surprising here.

Now, the inner display did much worse. Samsung used a UTG (Ultra Thin Glass) display this time around. Still, on top of that glass, lies a layer of plastic that is not removable, it’s there to harden and protect the display.

The thing is this layer of plastic still scratches easily. You can still scratch it with your fingernail if you’re not careful, so the level 2 pick does the trick as well. Samsung does warn you not to scratch it with your fingernail, though.

If you do decide to spend $2,000 on this phone, do note that you’ll need to be extra careful with it. Well, you’ll need to be careful with the phone’s main display, as it’s really easy to scratch up. Samsung does include a regular screen protector on it, by default, though.

This durability test also proves that the phone’s frame is made out of metal. The same goes for its physical buttons. The back of the device is covered by Corning’s Gorilla Glass.

Its hinge survived sand & small rocks

He also decided to throw a bunch of sand and small rocks on the phone, to test its hinge. This time around, the hinge did a great job of keeping all that away, much better than the original Galaxy Fold. The phone kept functioning just fine. This did, however, mess up the fingerprint scanner. That fingerprint scanner also can’t handle scratches.

The phone’s main display lasted about 15 seconds under a direct flame. The plastic layer did get damaged in the process. The phone’s secondary display lasted for about 15 seconds as well.

The last test that Zack decided to do is the bend test, as per usual. Surprisingly enough, the phone handled this test really well, it did not snap in half. So, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 is more durable than it seems. Once Samsung figures out a way to harden that inner display, everything will fall into place. It does seem like the company did a really good job this time around, though. If you’d like to know more about the phone, check out our review.
