In an official blog, Google has announced that starting from November 16, a new group created on Google Chat will be unthreaded by default.
Ever since the launch of Google Chat, the conversations in groups are always threaded. However, with the arrival of the new features on November 16, users will be able to toggle chat history on or off in Google Chat unthreaded rooms.
Threaded conversations in Google Chat rooms were okay for those who had a few members in the group. But it made no sense for groups with more number of members.
After this new feature makes its way to Google Chat, users will see a new “Use threaded replies” option. This would allow them to either organize the group chats into different threads or not.
This feature is just like Gmail and notes, though it is not available for Google Hangout chats. Note that users will not be able to change whether a room threaded or unthreaded after it is created. So, the decision has to be taken right when the room is being created.
Google Chat has been a serious competitor to already popular Slack and Microsoft Teams. But with the arrival of this feature would give it an edge for faster moving groups that do not require going over to older conversations frequently.
This simpler type of conversation would now encourage users to stick with Google Chat. As it gives greater flexibility in group discussions.
Existing Google Chat rooms will not be susceptible to change
Notably, the new Google Chat unthreaded room support arriving this month won’t have any impact on the already created or existing chat rooms.
The users are free to continue in the threaded rooms or create a new Google Chat unthreaded room after November 16. You can create as many unthreaded rooms as you want.
For Admins, this feature will be enabled by default. Moreover, admins will also be able to set room history settings on/off for unthreaded rooms.
For end-users, Google Chat unthreaded rooms will now be the default unless you create a new room with threaded conversations on.
This new Google Chat unthreaded room support would be more suitable for groups having high-volume participants. Larger organizations that are now very commonly using Google Chat.
Apparently, as mentioned in the official post, the full rollout of this new feature would commence from November 16, 2020. And it would take around 1-3 days for full feature visibility in Google Chat.
Google will be rolling out this new feature for Essentials, Business Starter, Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Essentials. Along with Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Education, Enterprise for Education, and Nonprofits customers.
