One of the cooler features of the PS4 that was added in its later years was the ability to stream music from Spotify, something which the PS5 can do to.
Of course this isn’t just referring to the act of opening the Spotify app and streaming music like you would on any other device. You can actually stream your Spotify playlists or tracks one the PS5 while you’re playing games.
In doing so, you can listen to your favorite music while you’re inside of a game. If that’s your thing. If you’re like me, you probably prefer to be immersed in the audio of the game itself. Although, some games do lend themselves well to having different types of music play in the background.
If you’re wondering how to stream music from Spotify on your PS5 while you’re playing a game, it’s actually pretty easy to set up. In this guide we’ll walk you through what to do step by step so you can enjoy a playlist the next time you boot up your favorite title.
How to stream music on your PS5 while playing games
First, make sure to install the Spotify app
The first thing you’ll need to do is download and install the Spotify app onto your PS5. This is assuming you didn’t just transfer it over from a PS4 console during the setup.
If you didn’t do that, then head to the media tab and look under all apps. Scroll to find Spotify and download it. The installation is part of this process and it shouldn’t take more than 20 seconds because the app isn’t very large.
If this is your first time installing Spotify on the console, you’ll also need to sign into the app so your account profile is there.
Find the Users and Accounts screen
If you don’t already have your account linked to Spotify, then that’s your next step as you’ll need it linked to the PS5 if you want to stream music from a playlist while you’re playing.
To link your account, start by going to the settings screen of your PS5. Look for the little cog button in the top right corner of the screen. It should be right next to your profile avatar.
This is where you’ll be able to access all the accounts that you have set up on your PS5. Whether it’s another player profile or an account from a third-party app. Such as Spotify or Twitter.
Navigate to Link With Other Services
Find the Link With other Services option about halfway down the page. Under this section you’ll find accounts from apps like Spotify, Twitter, YouTube, and Twitch.
Link your Spotify account
Highlight Spotify and link the account that you’re wanting to access. Although, keep in mind that if you already signed into Spotify from the app, this may have already linked the account for you. Twitch was not automatically linked for me personally when I signed into the app. So presumably the same thing happens with Spotify.
In the event that Spotify did not automatically link for you, you should be able to link it here. Once your Spotify account is linked, you can then begin streaming music from the Spotify app inside of your games while you play.
Alternatively, this is the screen you would go to if you wanted to unlink any of those accounts as well. Simply click on any of the accounts that show as linked, and there’s an unlink button that you can click on to unlink it.
Tap the PlayStation button on the controller
Whether you’re inside of a game or not, you can access your Spotify playlists. All you have to do is tap on the PlayStation button on the controller.
This will bring up the dock at the bottom with various options. One of these is music. Navigate to the music icon, click on it, and it should just bring up a panel of different playlists from Spotify, as well as music that you’ve recently streamed.
Find something to listen to and click play and that’s basically it. You can now go back to your game and continue playing while enjoying some of your favorite tracks at the same time.
You can also click the PlayStation button again at any point to pause the music, and you can even click on the Sound option to adjust the volume of music and video.
