The Huawei P50 flagships could end up using Qualcomm processors, a new report states. It was reported a while back that Qualcomm applied for a license to provide processors to Huawei. Well, this new report claims that the license has been granted.
Do note that this information has not yet been confirmed by Qualcomm or Huawei, at least at the time of writing this article. The report does come from China, in case you were wondering.
Qualcomm may provide the Snapdragon 875 SoC for the Huawei P50
If this report ends up being true, the Huawei P50 smartphones could ship with the upcoming Snapdragon 875. That processor will become official later this year, as did the Snapdragon 865 in 2019.
As most of you already know, Huawei has been developing its HiSilicon processors until recently. The US ban managed to prevent the company from manufacturing those chips in the future.
How? Well, TSMC, the company that manufactures Huaweis’s processors, is using US-made machines to make those processors reality. The US decided to prevent them from manufacturing SoCs for Huawei.
The Kirin 9000 is the last flagship processor from Huawei
Things may change with a new president in the US, we’ll see, but at the moment, Huawei is still unable to continue working on its chips. The Huawei Mate 40 series does come with the Kirin 9000, the last flagship processor that Huawei came up with.
The Kirin 9000 is a very compelling chip, as were its predecessors. Huawei has been making high-quality silicone for years now, so it would be nice to see those chips back. Qualcomm desperately needs competition in the market.
Things may change drastically in the coming months. We’ll see what will happen moving forward, but at the moment, it does seem like Huawei may end up using Qualcomm’s processors moving forward. We still don’t have much information on the Snapdragon 875, but chances are it will be an extremely powerful processor, as were its predecessors.
