Nokia is launching a new 5G smartphone called Nokia 8 V 5G UW today. The confirmation comes from a now-deleted countdown timer to a live stream that would take place on Monday, November 9 on the Finnish company’s official YouTube account. Separately, Nokia has also tweeted a teaser for the “special US launch announcement” on November 9 at 9 AM EST.
The “5G UW” suffix all but confirms that it will be a Verizon-exclusive model of an existing 5G phone. The carrier has been slapping that suffix on pretty much every 5G phone that supports its mmWave ultra-wideband network.
Since the Nokia 8.3 5G is the only 5G-capable phone from the Finnish company yet, the upcoming Nokia 8 V 5G UW should be nothing but a Verizon variant of it. Unlocked models of the device arrived in the US last month, but sans support for the carrier’s mmWave 5G.
Nokia 8 V 5G UW could be a re-branded Nokia 8.3 5G for Verizon
The Nokia 8.3 5G arrived in March this year as the world’s first “truly global” 5G phone. Here, “truly global” essentially means it supports 5G roaming in every country in which the next-gen wireless network has been deployed, something no other 5G phone offered back then.
However, despite Nokia’s “truly global” claim, the device didn’t arrive in the US until last month. And when it finally arrived, it lacked support for both AT&T and Verizon’s 5G networks. Now, nearly eight months after the initial announcement, the device seems to be finally headed to the latter at least. Not quite “truly global” yet!
Although it’s not officially confirmed yet that the upcoming Nokia 8 V 5G UW is a re-branded Nokia 8.3 5G, that seems highly likely. HMD Global may make some minor design variations and slight changes to the internals, but the core specifications should remain the same.
The Nokia 8.3 5G is the closest thing Nokia has to a flagship phone right now. Powered by the Snapdragon 765G SoC, the device comes with up to 8GB of RAM and 128GB of expandable storage. It sports a big, 6.81-inch IPS LCD screen of 1080 x 2400 pixels resolution.
The quad rear-camera setup houses a 64-megapixel main sensor along with a 12-megapixel ultrawide camera, a 2-megapixel macro camera, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. The front-facing camera is a 24-megapixel sensor from Zeiss.
It runs Android 10 ou of the box. And thanks to the Android One program, you’re getting a near-stock Android UI. A side-mounted fingerprint, 4,500mAh battery with 18W fast wired charging, 3.5mm headphone jack, and dual-SIM capabilities are also part of the package. The unlocked Nokia 8.3 5G retails for $699 stateside.
