Zack from JerryRigEverything YouTube channel dissected the world’s first under-display smartphone camera in his teardown. We’re, of course, talking about the camera that is included in the ZTE Axon 20 5G.
That very same source durability-tested this smartphone quite recently, and now he gives us some more insight as to how the phone’s under-display camera functions.
Teardown shows us how the world’s first under-display camera functions
It seems like ZTE Axon 20 5G uses two screens stacked one on top of the other. That basically allows the camera to look out from beneath the top layer, and take a picture.
The results are not perfect, notes XDA Developers. The pictures do turn out blurrier than they should, though ZTE is trying to counter that with the smoothening effect.
The pictures are usable, though a direct light source tends to mess up images completely. XDA actually described photos as being too “soft”. That is probably the word to use, based on the samples we’ve seen.
Still, it’s worth noting that this is the very first smartphone with an under-display camera available to the public. Xiaomi claims that its under-display camera is much-improved at this point, so the future may be bright for the technology after all.
This technology will allow companies to ditch display holes and notches
Under-display cameras are a perfect way for companies to ditch notches and display holes. The technology will probably improve sooner rather than later, while in the meantime, the ZTE Axon 20 5G should be avoided if you want great selfies.
If you’re not much of a selfie taker, and you don’t mind a front-facing camera that is not amongst the best around, the ZTE Axon 20 5G is one sleek device. Its thin bezels, and all that screen real-estate may be worth the tradeoff for you.
If you’d like to take a look at the entire teardown that Zack provided, the video is embedded down below. It has a duration of around 6 minutes, and it’s well-worth the watch.
