Google Is Working On Stadia Upgrades But They're A Secret For Now

Google says it’s working on upgrades for Stadia to beef up the power and performance of its cloud gaming platform and service. But the details aren’t something the company is willing to share at the moment.

Those Stadia upgrades? They’re a secret for now. In a recent interview with The Escapist, Stadia’s John Justice talked about a whole bunch of stuff in regards to the platform. Part of which revolved around upgrading Stadia’s tech.

Justice made it clear though that Google wouldn’t be discussing any specific details about the hardware. Not until after the upgrades have already been implemented. Which means users won’t have any idea what the upgrades will be or how they’ll improve the user experience before Google has them in place.

That isn’t necessarily a bad thing. For some it might be enough just to know that the upgrades are still on the horizon. When asked why it wouldn’t share details, Justice says it’s because the Stadia team doesn’t want to overpromise and underdeliver.

In addition to Stadia upgrades, Google is working on the data cap issue

Stadia has had its ups and downs throughout the first year of development. But all things considered, over the last few months Google has really ramped up the improvements. From more games to to more features.

Cyberpunk 2077 for example just launched for Stadia on December 10. And right now Stadia is actually one of the best places to play it. Considering all of the issues it’s having for last-gen console owners.

But playing all of those games eats up a lot of data. Especially if Stadia is your main place to play. For users in the US, that means potentially hitting data caps imposed by ISPs. But Justice says that Google and the Stadia team are working with ISPs in the US to hopefully come to some sort of resolution.

He did not however expand on what exactly that resolution would be. Much like the upgrades, a resolution to the data cap issue is probably something that users will hear about once things are set in stone.

Google will no longer talk about features ahead of time

One of Google’s biggest lessons according to Justice is that the team talked too much about features before actually getting them out there into the hands of players.

For a little while now Google has simply been releasing features. And moving forward, Google will no longer talk about features ahead of time. It would rather surprise people by quietly releasing these new features for Stadia. Which seems to have been working for them.

This plays a little bit into not overpromising. As if Google doesn’t talk about it, and instead decides to ship features as a surprise, players are likely to be much more excited because it’s not something they were expecting.
