Motorola's Android 11 Update Plans Appear And May Disappoint You

Now, Motorola has never really been the best when it comes to upgrading their devices to newer versions of Android, well, at least since Google sold the company. Android Authority reported on Motorola’s Android 11 upgrade list, and it’s a little disappointing. For anybody who buys a new smartphone you kind of expect to get at least two major updates. Motorola hasn’t been so kind to even give that as of lately.

2020 has not exactly been a year to remember. From the pandemic to murder hornets it has been crazy. So some nice news is always welcome. However, Motorola is not the one to provide good news, unfortunately.

Motorola’s Android 11 upgrade list has been leaked. The list only lists devices from last year and this year as being upgraded. Unfortunately, even if your device came out in 2019 or 2020 there is no guarantee it will get upgraded anytime soon. You could be waiting for a while.

The rollout of Android 11 will be “starting in the coming months, pending partner support” according to Motorola. Devices like the Razr 5G and Edge are in line to be updated.

Not all devices will get the Android 11 update

Not all devices will see the Android 11 update. For example, if you have a Motorola One Action bought in North America you won’t be happy. To clarify, Motorola only plans to update the Latin American and European versions of that phone. As a result of those devices being apart of the Android One program.  Devices in the Android One program are held to stricter upgrade standards.

Android upgrade support has been under scrutiny for years. Meanwhile, Apple and their support for devices that can span back 5 years Android manufacturers are lacking. However, recently Samsung has taken a step to improve the support for their devices.

Now, Google has always tried to support their devices for as long as possible as well. In addition to that Google recently announced a partnership with Qualcomm with a goal of providing four years of support for Android devices.

That news came as a breath of fresh air considering many new devices may become obsolete after a couple of years. As a result of that partnership, many devices will benefit from that partnership. Who knows, maybe Motorola will become better at providing upgrades thanks to that partnership. Until then check out the list below to see if your device is one of the ones that will see the Android 11 update.
