Samsung actually wants other OEMs to join the foldable smartphone market. To be clear, this is what Samsung Display wants, as it wants to sell other OEMs its foldable panels.

Samsung Display is hoping to start doing that in 2021 for the first time. That goes for UTG (Ultra Thin Glass) display covers as well. It was stated that it’s not in the company’s interest to have just one major brand dominating the foldable market.

Samsung is completely dominating the foldable smartphone market

That company, as you may have guessed, is Samsung. The South Korean tech giant is an absolute king of the foldable smartphone market. According to DSCC (Display Supply Chain Consultants), Samsung will end 2020 with an 88-percent share of the foldable smartphone market.

That share is based on foldable smartphone shipments, in case you were wondering. The Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy Z Fold 2 were selling quite well for the company in 2020.

Now, Samsung Display is also dominating the foldable display market. The company sold 96-percent of foldable display panels out of all the foldable display panels sold in Q3 2020. So, it’s completely dominating the market.

Samsung Display is leading the foldable display panel market

To put things into perspective, Samsung Display probably has a share of around 87-percent when it comes to the foldable display panel market in 2020. That market will only grow moving forward, by the way, as expected.

The shipments of foldable display panels are projected to reach 95 million by 2025, and 59 million of those will be made for smartphones. So, smartphones will drive the manufacturing of foldable display panels, basically.

Having said that, Samsung is expected to announce four foldable smartphones in 2021. Many other companies will join it, including Google, Xiaomi, Vivo, and OPPO, for the first time ever. Motorola is also expected to continue making foldable smartphones, and the same goes for Huawei. 2021 will be a year during which foldable smartphones will flourish, it seems.
