ZTE Axon 20 5G Set To Launch Globally On December 21

ZTE has launched the Axon 20 5G smartphone exclusively in China on September 1. It is crowned as the world’s first smartphone with an under-display camera. Now, the company plans to bring the Axon 20 5G to global markets on December 21. Initially, the device will only available on the official website in the EU, UK, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines, UAE, Ukraine, Saudi Arabia, and South Africa.

As of now, the company hasn’t yet revealed the global pricing of the device. In China, the ZTE Axon 20 5G base variant with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage retails for CNY 2,198 (approx. $335). It also comes with 8GB of RAM and 128GB/256GB of internal storage. The selfie camera on this device is hidden beneath the display.

With the new under-display camera technology, the device offers a full-screen experience without the need for pop-up or sliding cameras. It also looks sleek and measures just 7.9mm in thickness. On the front, the Axon 20 5G sports a 6.92-inch AMOLED display with Full HD+ resolution and 90Hz refresh rate.

As seen on other popular mid-range 5G smartphones, ZTE also opted for the Snapdragon 765G mobile platform for this device. It packs up to 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of storage along with a MicroSD card slot. The device also runs on the last year’s Android 10 out of the box.

It includes several under-display technologies

The company has used high transparency materials, an in-house algorithm, and more to overcome the limitations of under-display camera technology. Additionally, the Axon 20 5G also includes an under-display fingerprint scanner, an under-display sound for audio output, and an under-display ambient light sensor.

Speaking of the cameras, the quad-camera setup on the rear includes a 64-megapixel primary camera, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide camera, a 2-megapixel depth camera, and a 2-megapixel macro sensor. Moreover, the hidden selfie camera on the front can capture selfies in 32-megapixel resolution.

The device features a 4,220mAh battery and supports 30W fast charging. Notably, there is no wireless charging support on this device. Connectivity options include 5G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, NFC, and a USB Type-C port. It measures 172.1 x 77.9 x 7.9 mm and weighs 198 grams.

Both the grooved power button and volume rockers are on the right edge of the device. Since the US Commerce Department had imposed the ban on China-based ZTE, the Axon 20 5G won’t be available in the US anytime soon.
