Reports have emerged that Amazon has begun developing a radar-equipped sleep apnea tracker. As reported by Business Insider the device will sense your breathing and track interruptions associated with the sleep disorder.
Amazon is regularly at the cutting edge of innovation across various fields. Be it from delivery to home tech the giant company often comes up with new answers to question we did not know we had.
For example, Amazon has recently expanded its delivery aircraft fleet. The company has purchased eleven Boeing 767-300 aircraft to better service its delivery needs.
In another area of the business, Amazon has rolled out a new feature to its Fire TV devices. This feature is designed for peak efficiency allowing you to check the footage on your smart home security camera.
Now it looks like Amazon is set to go in another direction with this sleep apnea device. For those that do not know sleep apnea is a medical condition where your breathing starts and stops during sleep as your airways relax and get more narrow.
Amazon set to launch sleep apnea tracker
This device aims to combat the condition to better monitor one’s sleep quality. This concept is hardly a new one with hundreds of apps and devices out there claiming to help you sleep better by analyzing your current resting hours.
Famously, back in 2014, Nintendo tried to launch a non-wearable device that could track sleep via radio waves. However, the company eventually decided the device would never become a viable commercial product.
Amazon has named to the new project “Brahms” after the German composer of Lullaby. It appears the company’s internal team has worked on this project over the last year.
As reported by The Verge the device currently resembles a “standing hexagonal pad connected to a metal wire base”. The device is designed to sit next to your bed and will only be around palm-sized.
Reports suggest that the machine learning approach that Amazon has taken alongside cloud technologies could allow it to understand sleeping disorders beyond sleep apnea.
However, Amazon has declined to comment on the reports made in the original report. Perhaps aiming to keep things secret for a little while longer.
As a result, details are still very thin on the ground when it comes to timelines and specific developments. Given Amazon’s lack of comment, it could be some time before we see this product roll out but it will be worth keeping our ears to the ground.
