OnePlus is expected to announce its very first smartwatch this year, and the device just made one step closer to launch. The company’s smartwatch got certified in India, over at BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards).
Two OnePlus smartwatch variants got certified, bringing it one step closer to launch
The watch has been spotted in two variants, the OnePlus W501GB and W301GB. The certification documents don’t really share any useful information, save for those model names.
The company’s smartwatch has been rumored for quite some time now, and was expected to launch last year. That did not happen, but the company’s CEO more or less confirmed it will happen this year.
The device’s name will likely be the OnePlus Watch, and it may launch alongside the OnePlus 9 series. If that happens, we’ll likely see it in March, as that is the month the company’s new flagships are expected to arrive in.
Max Jambor revealed last year that the OnePlus Watch will feature a round display. At this point in time, we’re not sure if it will run Wear OS or not. We’ve seen rumors pulling both ways, so we’ll have to wait and see.
Wear OS will likely come pre-installed
It would make sense for it to ship with Wear OS, similar to its sibling, the OPPO Watch. OPPO did put its own spin on Google’s Wear OS, and the final product is actually really good. OnePlus could do something similar to that.
Another tidbit pointing in that direction is the news that OnePlus is working with Google to improve Wear OS. The company is likely working with Google for the sake of its upcoming wearables.
That is probably why OnePlus waited so long to release a smartwatch, it did not think Wear OS is good enough. That is also the reason we’ll probably see a smartwatch version of OxygenOS run on the company’s upcoming watch.
OnePlus will probably start teasing this smartwatch in the near future, so stay tuned for that. More information will surely follow soon.
