If you handle big files over the cloud and uploading big files is one of your tasks, then you will be glad to hear that Microsoft will soon allow users to upload files as big as 250GB on OneDrive, Microsoft Teams, and Sharepoint.
This piece of information comes from an official blog by Microsoft. The upload limit size has been bumped from 100GB to 250GB. Which is good news for people working from home due to the COVID-19 scenario.
Several professions require users to upload big files like 4K or 8K videos, CAD files, datasets, etc. over cloud storage. These files once upload, can be shared with colleagues and clients.
Moreover, users will also be able to upload their personal videos and photos on to OneDrive, thus clearing out their smartphone or desktop storage space. Pretty convenient.
As per the official blog, Microsoft says that in order to provide support for workers, students, and users across the globe, this decision of increasing the upload limit from 100GB to 250GB was taken.
Feedback from customers in fields like heavy manufacturing, transportation, healthcare, and media was gathered, ultimately led Microsoft to increase the upload file size limit.
Files are backed up in Azure Storage, ensuring high availability & performance
Workers using SharePoint or Teams will also be able to take benefit of this increased upload file size limit. Any file uploaded via these platforms will also be eligible to take advantage of this new enhancement.
Besides, as already mentioned, this is not limited to businesses and schools. OneDrive users can also store their personal images and videos or even upload the huge zip file containing a large PC game that can be shared later, with friends.
Microsoft says that they achieved this 250GB file size limit by optimizing storage. Optimization of storage also helped in improving the upload performance.
Each file is split into smaller chunks, and each chunk is encrypted with a unique key. Ensuring that the files upload by you are safe and secure.
All the files uploaded are backed up in Azure storage, which ensures high availability and performance. Microsoft has also taken care of the task of syncing these huge files.
Thanks to differential sync, changes that you and your colleague make are only synced. This saves a good amount of time huge files take to sync. Furthermore, it helps in saving network usage as well.
Support for the 250GB upload size limit will start seeding for users by the end of January 2021. Microsoft also expects this new feature to be generally available for all users by the end of this quarter.
