Rokid today announced Rokid Vision 2 in Hangzhou, China. These are their latest binocular MR (Mixed Reality) glasses.
Rokid Vision 2 extends to existing user interfaces including smartphones, tablets, laptops, and gaming consoles. Additionally, the new glasses are compatible with both 4G and 5G networks. Vision 2 also combines AR (Augmented Reality) with AI capabilities according to their press release. Rokid believes that this will improve productivity in certain scenarios for workers. And of course, provide more immersive experiences for entertainment and gaming purposes. Rokid believes that these MR glasses can open some new and exciting avenues such as cultural tourism, museum tours, industrial or medical exhibitions.
Rokid Vison 2 is lightweight and works like ordinary eyeglasses
The main advantage of Rokid Vision 2 is that they resemble a slightly large pair of sunshades. Besides being lightweight, they can be folded up an ordinary pair of glasses for storage. Using some cutting-edge diffractive waveguide technology Rokid achieves a picture equivalent to viewing a 120-inch TV about 4 meters or 12 feet away. In technical terms, this translates to a light transmittance of 85% and 40° field of view (FoV).
For an immersive audiovisual experience, the Rokid Vision 2 has dual-directional speakers. And to keep interaction hands-free, Rokid includes dual microphones so that you can control these glasses via voice commands.
Through producing the Vision series, Rokid has concluded several standards for MR hardware products. Du Hui, Head of the Hardware Department at Rokid, shares that the standards are: high optical transmittance, large unobstructed FoV, ultra-long exit pupil distance, multi-platform accessibility, multimodal interaction, and multi-external perception capability.
Updated Software and New Apps are also coming
Along with new hardware, Rokid Vision 2 comes with new applications that support spatial interaction such as Fantasy World, Holographic Cinema, and Virtual City. These are in-house native apps from Rokid and include Fantasy World, Holographic Cinema, and Virtual City.
Fantasy World includes a 360-degree immersive space via stereo rendering technology and natural multimodal interaction (voice, head control, and gestures). For Holographic Cinema Rokid uses multimodal interactive technology, real-time navigation, and a multimedia engine. Rokid claims that this will create an immersive 4D IMAX theater-like experience, including 2D, 3D, and 360 panoramic videos. Lastly, Virtual City adopts 6 Degrees of Freedom, voice, and other tech with a single RGB camera. This allows the users to move freely in a virtual space.
Along with hardware, Rokid is trying to get more traction on software. To that effect, Rokid makes available their SDK for multimodal interaction, stereo rendering, visual and multimedia engines to encourage Android app development. Rokid claims that their XR software system supports Amlogic, Qualcomm, HiSilicon and plan to build an XR ecosystem with additional hardware partners and software developers.
