Samsung has shared an official post detailing the features of its newest 108MP image sensor. To give you a brief, the new ISOCELL 108MP sensor captures more details and produces sharper results.
At the recently concluded Unpacked event, Samsung unveiled its Galaxy S21 series of devices. The devices, especially the Galaxy S21 Ultra packs some new features.
Talking about the main highlight, i.e. the camera on the Galaxy S21 Ultra packs a new 108MP ISOCELL HM3 image sensor. FYI, this is the fourth time a 108MP sensor is used by Samsung on its devices.
Good thing is that Samsung has improved on various key factors. These factors include autofocus, extended dynamic range, enhanced low-light performance, and better power efficiency.
This new 108MP ISOCELL HM3 lens features 0.8micron-sized pixels and a 1/33″ sensor. Samsung has also worked and improved upon its autofocus feature.
Notably, the new 108MP Samsung sensor comes with an improved Super PD Plus feature. This helps in attaining faster autofocus, which many first impression videos on YouTube have highlighted.
This new Super PD Plus feature adds AF-optimized micro-lenses, which helps to keep moving objects in sharp focus. Ultimately delivering better results.
Samsung 108MP ISOCELL sensor also features a Smart ISO Pro technology
As mentioned above, this new Samsung 108MP ISOCELL sensor, which is housed inside the Galaxy S21, packs tons of new features to improve the overall camera performance.
Another important feature that this 108MP ISOCELL sensor sport is the Smart ISO Pro technology. It is a high-dynamic-range technology. Basically, it captures both high and low ISO frames at once and merges them to produce a 12-bit color depth image.
This feature allows the sensor to capture brighter and vibrant images in harsh or low lighting conditions. Samsung touts this Smart ISO Pro technology brings an improvement in the light sensitivity of up to 50%.
The pixels on the ISOCELL sensor are arranged in special three-by-three single color structures, which allow for effective nine-pixel binning.
Apparently, this nine-pixel binning technology helps to mimic a 12MP image sensor with a large 2.4micron-pixels. Again, this helps in retaining details and sharpness in low light conditions.
Finally, the ISOCELL sensor is optimized for low energy usage. In preview mode, it consumes around 6.5% less energy. All these features make the 108MP sensor on the Galaxy S21, one of the best cameras, at least on paper.
For actual results, we will have to put it under test and see if it actually justifies the properties and features, these new ISOCELL sensor packs.
