Small phone fans rejoice! Sony is planning to revive its Xperia Compact series of smartphones. A well-known tipster, Steve Hemmerstoffer aka @OnLeaks, shared the information via The Voice, along with some renders of the upcoming phone.
We still don’t know what will this phone be called, but you can check it out in the gallery below. This will be the first Xperia Compact smartphone since the Xperia XZ2 Compact which launched in Q1 2017.
Sony will revive its Xperia Compact series, after a 4-year hiatus
So, Sony basically took a 4-year hiatus from launching small handsets. We don’t know if this change of direction has something to do with the iPhone 12 Mini, but it’s quite possible.
It’s not exactly a secret that Sony’s Xperia Compact series had its following. It may not have been selling like crazy, but there are still quite a few people who prefer smaller smartphones. Sony was one of the very few Android OEMs who offered such devices back in the day.
Having said that, it seems like the upcoming Xperia Compact smartphone will feature a dewdrop notch. That notch will host the phone’s front-facing camera. The display will be flat, and the bottom bezel will be noticeably thicker than the rest.
This is not the most modern design we’ve seen lately, not even close, but there you have it. That may be the sacrifice Sony is willing to take to make this phone a reality. A fingerprint scanner will be placed on the right, and double as a power / lock button.
Above that button, you’ll notice the volume up and down buttons. Two cameras will be included on the back of the phone, above an LED flash. Those two cameras will be vertically-aligned, and included in the top-left corner of the phone’s back side.
A 5.5-inch display will be included
The source also revealed that the phone will measure 140 x 68.9 x 8.9mm, and it will include a 5.5-inch display. It will still be larger than the iPhone 12 Mini, which comes with a 5.4-inch display, and measures 131.5 x 64.2 x 7.4mm.
The main reason for considerably larger dimensions are those bezels, all of them combined. The source also revealed that an 8-megapixel camera will be included on the front of the phone.
