Sony Xperia 1 & Xperia 5 Picks Up Android 11 Update

It’s been four months or so since Google launched the Android 11 update. Finally, Sony is now rolling out the Android 11 stable update for its Xperia 1 and Xperia 5 devices.

Sony is not a name to reckon with when it comes to pushing timely security or firmware updates. The company has seemingly lost its grip on the smartphone market.

Fortunately, Sony tried to make a comeback with its Xperia 1 and Xperia 5 devices back in 2019. We expect the same this year as well from the Japanese smartphone OEM.

Another thing, where Sony has found it hard to keep up with the pace, is rolling out regular updates. The good news is that the first generation Xperia 1 and Xperia 5 devices are now picking up the stable update.

Back in November, Sony released its Android 11 update schedule. According to the updated plan, the Sony Xperia 1 and 5 units were scheduled to pick up the stable Android 11 update from February 2021.

But coming in as a surprise, Sony decided not to make its users wait and now, is seeding the update. Multiple user reports confirm that the Xperia 1 and Xperia 5 have already started receiving Android 11 via the stable channel.

Xperia 1 and 5 Android 11 stable update packs December 2020 security patch

The new update is arriving on the Sony Xperia 1 and Xperia 5 with build number 55.2.A.0.630. According to XDA, the Android 11 update for both devices weighs around 1GB in size.

Moreover, the update also bumps the security patch level to December 2020. The Google Play System Update also stands in December 2020.

Sony has provided no official changelog for the updates. However, we expect that the new update brings all the latest features of Android 11 for the duo.

The much-requested and popular Photography Pro feature present on the Mark II series is, unfortunately, not ported in this update. Which is kind of a bummer.

The Android 11 update on the duo will arrive via OTA in batches. Meaning that not all the units will pick up the update at the same time.

Since the update weighs around 1GB in size, we advise that you download it via a stable Wi-Fi connection. Another important thing to note is that only the dual-SIM variants of Xperia 1 and 5 are currently picking up the update.

Besides, the update is live in select European countries, but we expect it to expand over to other regions soon. In case you have not yet received the update, you can manually check for it by heading over to your phone’s Settings menu.

From there, go to the Software Update section and see if it detects the latest update.
