It seems like 2021 will be the year dedicated to rollable phones. The CES 2021 (Consumer Electronics Show) is undergoing and not only LG< but TCL has also given a closer look at a rollable phone that it under works.
LG introduced the LG Rollable a few days back, and it got everyone excited. Although Oppo was the first to introduce this concept with its Oppo Find X 2021, it seems like LG might beat Oppo in commercially making this device available.
Moreover, TCL has also joined the bandwagon and shown off a rollable phone and has confirmed that it will launch a phone with a flexible display this year.
As per a statement given to CNET, Stefan Streit, general manager of global marketing for TCL’s phone business, has confirmed this piece of information. However, it is not confirmed whether it will be a foldable phone or a rollable device.
Talking about the rollable phone, last year, TCL showed off a dummy model of what it was working on. TCL’s Tiago Abreu, head of the “X-Lab” at the TCL Industrial Design Center gives some information about the TCL rollable phone.
According to Tiago, the TCL phone can go from a 6.7-inch phone to a 7.8-inch tablet with “a simple tap of the finger.” This is the same as what we have seen with the Oppo rollable device.
Video shows that the back of the TCL rollable will be highly reflective
Not much is known at the moment about the TCL rollable phone. Taking a look at the video, it hints that the device may come with a highly reflective back. This is because the ad shows a woman applying lipstick using the devices’ back as a mirror.
TCL shared that the display on the rollable device will be an ‘AMOLED Rollable Display’. As per TechRadar, the device is apparently less than 10mm thick. So, a piece of good news here for those who hate thick smartphones.
In a series of tweets, TCL spokesman Brad Molen shared videos of real-life prototypes of both the rollable and scrolling displays.
TCL also showed off a foldable phone last year, which was once again, restricted in a dummy. But that was shown last year, meaning that TCL has had enough time to fix all the issues and be commercially ready.
Currently, if one is looking for a foldable device, without a doubt, anyone would recommend him/her the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 device. It will be interesting to see what this year brings in terms of innovation.
As 2020 was a year of foldable devices. We will see the newer generation of already exiting foldable along with new ones, and also, rollable phones.
