Google just announced the first developer preview for Android 12, and has also released the roadmap from the first preview to the final release.

As you can see in the image below, there will be a developer preview in February, March and April. With the first beta coming in May, followed by another in June, and July and the final one coming in August. That final beta in August is going to be a release candidate. Which means that it is basically final version of Android 12, with just a few bugs being ironed out. This gives developers more time to get their apps ready for the Android 12 release in September – Google doesn’t specifically say September, but that’s when it has come out historically.

It’s better to wait for the beta!

While you can flash the developer preview for Android 12 today, it’s still better to wait for the beta to come out. Firstly, it’s much easier to install, as it will be done via OTA instead of needing to flash the entire system image. But it’ll also be slightly more stable than the first developer preview is.

The first beta will also likely sport more user-facing features. So far in this first developer preview, we have only really seen developer-focused features, as well as some changes under-the-hood. So there’s not a lot of exciting things here for users, just yet. Those usually come with the first beta. When Google formally announces it around Google I/O.

If you are using your Pixel as your main device, it’s not a good idea to flash Android 12. But if you do use a different phone as your main phone and have a Pixel laying around, feel free to flash it. The system image is going to be fairly large. The Android 12 Developer Preview will work on the Pixel 3 and later.
