Huawei CEO Wants To Talk To The US President Biden

Huawei has been hurt quite a bit by the US ban, and the company’s CEO now wants to talk to the new US President Biden. He wants to repair the relations between the US and Huawei.

Huawei CEO, Ren Zhengfei, talked to international media in China for the first time in over a year, reports The Verge. Mr. Zhengfei expressed his wish to talk to President Biden, hoping for an “open policy” from the new administration.

He said the following: “I would welcome such phone calls and the message is around joint development and shared success”. This has been reported by CNBC, AFP, and the South China Morning Post.

He added that both the US and China want to experience economic growth, and this could help both sides. Mr. Zhengfei indicated that “If Huawei’s production capacity can be expanded, that would mean more opportunities for US companies to supply too”.

He essentially believes that both sides could benefit from improved relations. Mr. Zhengfei believes that Huawei can buy large volumes of American materials, components, and equipment, and therefore benefit both itself and the US.

As a reminder, Huawei cannot do business with US companies at the moment. This is the case due to the ban that was issued by the Trump administration. Huawei is on the Department of Commerce’s trade blacklist, and national security fears were cited.

Huawei cannot acquire license to use Google services

Because of this, Huawei also cannot be provided a license for Android from Google. That doesn’t mean it cannot use Android, as it’s an open source platform, but it cannot use Google services, which is a heavy blow for them.

Huawei CEO once again reiterated that the company has no plans to sell its smartphone business, despite what some rumors indicated. Huawei sold HONOR recently, but it won’t do the same with its core business.

He said the following: “We have decided we absolutely will not sell off our consumer devices, our smartphone business”.

It remains to be seen if President Biden will be willing to talk to Huawei’s CEO. Improved relations would sure benefit Huawei, and improve its situation in the smartphone market, amongst other things.
