Huawei has just announced its next-gen foldable smartphone, the Mate X2. The device got announced in China, and it’s actually exactly what we expected in terms of the design.
The Huawei Mate X2 upgrades upon the Mate X and Xs designs. The company has opted for an inwards folding design this time around, similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 2. This is probably a better idea overall, as the main display is not exposed when folded.

The Mate X2 comes with two displays, as opposed to one on the Mate X and Xs. Its main display is considerably larger, while the secondary on the outside covers almost the entire front face of the phone, when folded.
You’ll notice a pill-shaped display camera hole on that display, in the top-left corner. Both displays are flat, by the way, and the inner display doesn’t have a display hole or notch.
The device is made out of metal and glass, and it comes with a side-facing fingerprint scanner, which doubles as a power / lock button. Above it, you’ll notice the volume up and down buttons.
The company included six cameras here, along with Leica lenses
Huawei managed to squeeze six cameras inside of this device. There are two on the front, and four on the back. One of those four cameras is a periscope camera, which makes this the very first foldable to include a periscope camera.
The Huawei Mate X2’s main display measures 8 inches. We’re looking at a 2480 x 2200 AMOLED display here. That display offers a 90Hz high refresh rate, and 180Hz touch sampling. The outer display measures 6.45 inches, with a resolution of 2700 x 1160, and it’s also an AMOLED panel with a high refresh rate (90Hz), and 240Hz touch sampling.
The phone is fueled by Huawei’s most powerful SoC to date, the Kirin 9000. That is the very same processor that fuels a part of the Mate 40 series. It does support 5G connectivity, by the way.
The device comes in two variants, both of which come with 8GB of RAM. The more affordable one offers 256 GB of internal storage, while the more expensive one-ups that to 512 GB. A 4,500mAh battery is also included in the package, while the phone supports 55W fast wired charging. Wireless charging was not mentioned during the launch.
A periscope camera is a part of the package as well
Now, in regards to the cameras. A 50-megapixel main camera (Sony’s IMX700 RYYB sensor, OIS) is included as the phone’s main unit. In addition to that, you’ll find a 12-megapixel telephoto camera (3x optical zoom, OIS), and an 8-megapixel periscope camera (10x optical zoom, OIS). An ultra-wide camera is also a part of the package, it’s a 16-megapixel unit.
This handset is 74.6mm wide, and it actually comes in four color options. It comes in white, blue, black, and light blue colors. There are also two SIM card slots included here, and two stereo speakers. The 256 GB variant of the device is priced at CNY17,999 ($2,785), while the 512 GB model costs CNY18,999 ($2,939). The charger is included in the box. Do note that these price tags are for China. We’re not sure if this phone will launch globally, or when will that happen.
Huawei also said that Android 10 comes pre-installed on the device, along with EMUI 11. Google services are not included in the Chinese model, of course. They likely won’t be in the global variant either. The company also announced some accessories for the device in China.
